Help! How many grams are in a ‘large’ Easter egg? Dog has scoffed one.

Milk chocolate egg. Large size (more like the old medium size). The box says 235g but that also includes 3 chocolate treats at 28g each. He ate just over half of the egg before he was caught (treats untouched).

Are the hollow eggs 100g? Does the 235g include the packaging?

I have of course called the vet who said to keep an eye but the toxicity should be minimum. He’s a 10kg dog. I’m worried I may have worked out the grams wrong.

No, the weight will not include the packaging. Can you post a pic of the box?

SirVixofVixHall · 06/03/2023 18:59

The cocoa solids are the issue, so what are they ?

SirVixofVixHall · 06/03/2023 19:00

eg a cheaper brand of chocolate will be less dangerous than an expensive one with more cocoa.

BernadetteIsMySister · 06/03/2023 19:00

Sounds like she ate around 100g

ItWillBeAOK · 06/03/2023 19:02

I’m unsure how to post a picture. DD said it was a bounty Easter egg with 3 mini bounties . Dog did not eat the bounties but scoffed just over half of the hollow egg.

If the egg was 100g, he would have eaten around 70-80g at most .

My dog ate a chocolate orange. He was about 10kg probably at the time. A chocolate orange weighs 157g and the vet said the toxicity level would be borderline moderate so I took him in just in case and they induced vomiting. Sounds like you would probably be OK if it includes the weight of the treats.

ItWillBeAOK · 06/03/2023 19:06

That is reassuring as chocolate oranges are thicker whereas the egg is thin and hollow.

He’ll be fine, upset tummy maybe.

bozzabollix · 06/03/2023 19:10

If your dog is a Labrador I really wouldn’t worry (I know through extensive experience of endless stealing).

Think Bounty eggs have bugger all cocoa, I’m sure your dog will be fine. I’d baulk more at dark chocolate.

ItWillBeAOK · 06/03/2023 19:10

Ty. According to the calculator he should be fine but I’m worried I may have worked out the grams incorrectly. I don’t know how many are in the large hollow eggs.

If it’s this one I think the mini bounty bars are part of the 235.5g

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 06/03/2023 19:13

This one?

It's 150g for the whole egg, cocoa solids 25% minimum.

ItWillBeAOK · 06/03/2023 19:14

Yes that’s the egg! Is that a high amount of cocoa solids?

FatCatt · 06/03/2023 19:15

It depends on the dog in all honesty. Some are more sensitive to theobromine than others. When did he eat it?

FrenchieF · 06/03/2023 19:15

Try not worry , it’ll be an upset tummy at most for that amount. What type of dog do you have ?

ItWillBeAOK · 06/03/2023 19:15

He ate just over half of the hollow egg so around 75g or 85g at worst.

OP posts:
rainbowsandmagpies · 06/03/2023 19:17

The way I would work it out would be:

235 - (3x28) = 151 (egg weight)
151 ÷ 2 = 75.5g (half an egg)

Which using that toxicity calculator above suggests a neglible risk. I'd just keep an eye on him 😊

He’s a standard Dachshund, just under 10kg. He ate it around an hour ago.

Shelaydownunderthetable · 06/03/2023 19:17

I used the VetsNow calculator and it said negligible. I’m sure it’ll just maybe be an upset stomach!

FrenchieF · 06/03/2023 19:19

They’ll be fine, if he was to have an upset tummy it will be later on this evening, but I doubt he’ll have any side effects. Don’t worry x

ItWillBeAOK · 06/03/2023 19:19

Ty for posting everyone. I’ve been fraught and googling to find out.

FrenchieF · 06/03/2023 19:20

I’ve been there, had a few sleepless night with my dogs and they are always absolutely fine !
