Skinny dogs with bleeding floppy ears! TW blood

Hi everyone,
Our two-year-old dog has split the tips of his ears open and they won’t heal! Just looking for similar experiences / advice to stop our home looking like a murder scene!

We have a podenco mix dog - skinny lurcher type who should have tall pointy ears but whatever breed he’s mixed with has caused him to have long thin floppy ears like a Weimaraner.

At Christmas our dog had an allergic reaction to something at the seaside - hives on the outside of his ears and itchy inflamed inside ears. This was treated and healed up.

However due to the itchiness he started shaking his head back and forth causing his ears to whack off his bony shoulder blades. The tips of both ears cracked and started bleeding. They scabbed over time but they continue to split open and bleed every so often. When he shakes his head blood goes everywhere - carpets, walls, children’s toys 🤦‍♀️ The cut is so small at the end of his ear you’d never think it was capable of bleeding so much.

Since last week one ear has been bleeding really badly - multiple trips to vet as he shakes bandages off. Poor puppy is now lying sadly in a cone for a week, which the vet hopes will limit his head shaking. This is obviously not a long term solution.

Anyone got any advice? The vet said it’s not uncommon and ears too thin for stitches (plus he’d probably shake them right out). We asked about glue or something. This must be why greyhounds have tiny ears and podenco’s ears usually stand upright 😓

Oh bless. Would a snood type thing around neck stop ears hitting shoulders? Cone for when you’re not around? I use a comfy cone.

Handsome boy.

Podencopodanco · 03/03/2023 09:35

Yes maybe a soft comfy snood might cushion it a bit

Comfy cones look great too, thank you!

I used to have a greyhound and while we never had this problem she had a knitted snood/bonnet which covered her ears. It was designed for greyhounds, probably off Etsy

We used an inflatable cone post cancer surgery. Ddog was very appreciative of her new pillow!

He is lovely!!
Have you tried something with silver in to help healing?

No I’ll look into this. We’ve just been keeping the cuts clean and using blastoestimulina.

Aww wee soul.
Could you maybe use coconut oil on his ears to keep them soft at the ends and maybe not split so easily?

MyOwnVolt · 03/03/2023 09:57

My floppy eared lurcher gets split ear tips and they do take bloody ages to heal! And messy! We use Vaseline on them to stop the scabs drying out which helps but the most important thing is not leaving his collar on in the house as that’s what he was splitting his ears on when he shakes his head. It’s always worse in the winter when it’s cold.

Try these people, I promise I don’t work for them or anything but the reviews seem very good

Sorry to hear that but glad we’re not alone! Will definitely be keeping his collar off indoors after this.

When our dog had a cut on one ear we resorted to lightweight plasters , changed them when necessary but it took at least 8 weeks as he went to the groomers at least twice .

Onceacheetah · 18/08/2023 16:54

Try Sudocrem, it's antibacterial and won't fly off when he shakes. It heals everything - almost!

Spanielsarepainless · 20/08/2023 17:10

My first Labrador split the end of his tail and being such a waggy breed the house looked like a chainsaw massacre. Ended up with Elastoplast covered with micropore but it took months to heal.
