Best treatment for dogs itchy skin?

Hello

My 7 year old sprocker has red, itchy skin under his coat and is constantly biting or scratching it at the moment.

It started with a bout last year and I took him to the vets, they said it's like us having eczema and gave me some treatment but then told me if he gets it again, no need for the vets just have a look online for shampoos, sprays etc.

Can anyone recommend anything for this?

If not I'll call the vets and ask them the name of what we used last year 😊 thanks!

Have you tried changing diet as can make a difference. Mine used to have problems with her ears and skin a lot better after changing to burns dried food even though food she was on was recommended for her breed.

My Border collie tends to scratch a lot, it's common in border collies to have dry/sensitive skin. The vet suggested cutting out chicken and it has helped.

As a previous poster has recommended, look at diet. My Lab was on Royal Canin Labrador puppy (chicken-based) when we got him but was very itchy. He was swapped on to a fish-based food and has not a a problem since. Check labels as they may say salmon flavour but it only makes up a tiny percentage and the main protein will be chicken. We bought small 2/2.5kg bags until we found the right one for him.

Thanks everyone!

We changed his food on vet recommendation to grain free but will grab some fish based food instead of his usual chicken and see if it makes a difference.

Have ordered some anti itch oat shampoo and some ointment.

Oatmeal shampoo and a fish based diet and salmon oil. We've the same issue and it's all helping but a slow process.

Our lab/retriever was very itchy. Vet could find no obvious cause. I read somewhere that chicken is often the culprit so changed to a fish based dry food. She is now mostly itch free.

My dog has allergies and he spent his early years licking, chewing and scratching himself until he bled. It’s a process of elimination so we tried changing food and used various shampoos oils etc that made no difference. Turns out he is allergic to over 20 types of grass and house dust. So he is managed on cytopoint, malaseb shampoo and zero human food.

good luck

We add salmon oil to my labs meals, seems to help with her dry ski .

Thank you all!

I gave him a nice shower in the Oat anti itch shampoo, let it sit for 5 minutes whilst he had some peanut butter on his lick mat. I also got salmon oil and I put that on his food which he seemed to love so hoping it helps to clear up.

Vet recommended Zincoseb shampoo to us. Definitely helps. We are grain free and did cut out chicken but that made no difference so he's allowed it again.

Dogs have have human piriton (not piritese) from over the counter. That might help too

We are currently investigating whether the nexguard is causing it

Our golden retriever x GSD has very itchy skin at certain points in the year. The only way we could get on top of it was with Apoquel - which helped almost immediately. Once the feeling of itching stopped, the scratching / biting / licking stopped and her skin healed up nicely.

Our shar pei is itchy and Leucillin spray works really well. We just spray him head to toe once a day and it seems to keep it at bay.
