Younger or older?!?

Hi everyone!

We are considering getting a 2nd dachshund. We currently have a 2yr old dachshund who does suffer with a bit of seperation anxiety (not major). We are currently debating whether getting a younger or older dog than our current Ddog. Partner thinks around 6 months of age, but I worry a younger dog will learn the not so good traits of current Ddog. I think slightly older, maybe 3 ish who is already established at toilet training etc.

Any advice? Any experience?

Thanks all!

Hi OP, we had a doxxie nearing 2 who suffered separation anxiety. We brought a 2nd, a puppy.

Puppy is now 14 months, the elder one is less anxious. The younger is bigger and easily over powers the elder. The elder is definately the boss of the 2.

We couldn't crate train the elder he cried and barked continuously, the younger has been perfect in crate, when we leave the house we always put the younger in the crate, I'm conscious that play may turn to fight if left unsupervised.

They are brilliant together. However, be warned. 2 are considerably more work but also bring plenty more smiles

Thankyou for your quick reply!

Sounds similar to us here! How did they cope when you first introduced them? Is the younger in a crate near the elder one?

I am worried about potential fights so we are thinking a female as with currently have a neutered male so I'm hoping that will lower the risk. With getting a younger one, I am just concerned that current Ddog will teach the new puppy how to be anxious which could then make current Ddog worse and then end up with 2 massively anxious dogs and me stuck in the house 24/7.

We went for a confident puppy, the one that led the rest out of the holding pen, he can be a little hyperactive at times but seems to be a protector when our older one gets nervous. We took that approach based on hoping a confident puppy may help with the anxiety of the other dog.

Our 2 play a lot, they've been chasing each other around tbe house and garden tonight. youngest knows his place but I wouldn't take the risk. When we leave the house the basket sits next to the crate, we keep them close, they share a basket during the day at their choice, they have separate baskets.

Ours are both neutered males, a friend has 2 of a similar age one neutered the other not, they seem to be a little different behaved towards each other, more aggressive. Other friends have 2 females, I've not met anyone with a mixed pair so wouldn't know how that would work.

Thankyou for your reply! I am now considering going younger. I'm just worried of making the wrong decision. Our current dog loves other dogs so I know he would be over the moon with a friend!

Thanks again!
