breed size and insurance

I'm trying to sort out insurance for our new rescue puppy. She's a cross between a german shepherd, lurcher, collie and husky (to the best of my knowledge). I need to choose either medium dog (up to 20kg) or large, and it says it has to be accurate. I have no idea! The rescue said they think she'll be medium sized, but I'm worried about the german shepherd in her putting her over 20kg. If I pick the wrong option will my insurance be void?

I don't suppose there's a dog expert about who could guess her full grown size? Will add some pictures

Given at least 3 out of those 4 breeds have an average weight of over 20kg, I would go large. Better to overestimate than under.

All 11 weeks

Could you try ringing insurance companies and explaining that it's a rescue mongrel with four breeds suspected of being in the mix? And saying you don't know what the adult size/weight is likely to be. And see what they recommend.

With the breeds you mention, I'd expect "large"

adult husky: 20-27kg
lurcher: vary wildly, likely to be at least 25kg
collie: 18-23 kg
GSD: 30-40 kg

She's beautiful. I'd say large.

WinterMusings · 28/02/2023 10:27

She's gorgeous.

Surely if you email the insurance they can advise you if your options. I would expect to be able to upgrade from med to large if she outgrows the medium cover restrictions.

however, I'm trying to get over worrying about small things. What's the difference between med & large cost? If it's not too much more I'd just go for large.

Unluckycat1 · 28/02/2023 10:28

Thank you all! I was leaning towards large but had a moment of paranoia - the home visit woman warned me that insurance will look for reasons not to pay. Phoning is a good idea, there must be other breeds that straddle the line, Google tells me a female husky is between 17 and 24kg

Gorgeous, I'd have gone for saluki x if you'd not listed the make up. I'd pick large mongrel and if clear your wrong once adult you can probably change at annual renewal easily as won't have underpaid previously.

Unluckycat1 · 28/02/2023 10:37

@ScattyHattie the guess my dog app said 99% chance purebreed saluki 😅one of her brothers looked like a little husky, perfect grey and white colouring :)

What weight is she at 11 weeks?

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2023 11:44

I’d say she’s unlikely to be less than 20kg... which is an awfy weird cut off for large, my mongrel rescue is small collie sized and 21kg, my friends working line springer is 23kg (both nice lean shapes and not overweight)

So I suspect the rescue is right in that she’ll be medium rather than large, but the insurance cut off for medium and large is very low.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 28/02/2023 11:48

I would also suggest ‘over 20kg’ so large by your insurance Co standard.

She is very beautiful though, enjoy her !

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 28/02/2023 11:49

Definitely over 20kg, and she’s gorgeous, bring her here now! 😁

currantbee · 28/02/2023 11:50

It is an odd cut off, all the vets we've used large starts at 25kg

elm26 · 28/02/2023 11:54

I'd go for large personally!

She's a beauty 🥰

userxx · 01/03/2023 15:45

I was going to say saluki. She's gorgeous, whatever she is :)

Unluckycat1 · 02/03/2023 19:19

Thanks again everyone! I've gone for large :) I feel silly having asked now, she's practically able to eat food off the worktops already 🙈
