Lab in season - confused.com

First time dog owner and she has come into season this morning. Vet had told us to keep her away from other dogs while she was bleeding and vulva swollen etc. said it could be ten even twenty days. Then I came across this which suggests strongly I need to keep her under wraps for significantly longer for the Estrus cycle. ?
Any top tips? I do NOT want puppies on my hands.

What Are The Stages of a Dog in Heat?
The dog estrous cycle is made up of four stages. These are the proestrus, estrus, diestrus, and anestrus. The proestrus is the most obvious stage, while the other stages are more subtle.
Proestrus - This stage lasts for nine days on average but can reach 27 days. This is the most noticeable part of the estrous cycle. Your dog may produce blood-tinged discharge and her vulva will be swollen. At this time, your dog will not be receptive to any male’s advances.
Estrus - Ranging from four to 24 days in length. This period is when your dog is fertile and receptive to mating attempts.
Diestrus - Your dog is no longer receptive to males. This stage lasts for two month

Yes, you need to keep her away from other dogs until she is no longer receptive (and no longer causing mayhem by smelling as if she might be)

I'd say allow about 10 days after bleeding ceases.

Then ideally find a (small!) intact male dog and see who much interest he shows and how she reacts. Keep both on leads!! If he's going crazy and she's reacting with interest, give it another few days and try again. You're waiting for the time when they just show normal doggy greetings.

If no male dog around, just keep her on lead, but gradually increase walks to include places where you might meet other dogs and see reactions that way

Have you discussed with your vet best time to spay?

Vet said three months after her first season so I need to call and see if that's measured from day 1 of bleeding and get her booked in.

That's really helpful though thank you

We restricted our lab for about 3 weeks in total. We had bleeding for about 10 days, then she was obviously flagging (moving tail to one side for access if you scratched her back). Once that stopped we gave it another week to be on the safe side. Absolutely no sign of any additional interest after that.

Oh and be aware that vulva and nipples will remain slightly larger than before her first season so will never shrink all the way down again.

My pup is currently in season for the first time and last time. She's on day 15 and still bleeding ☹️ I just want it to be over already! Really surprised she's still bleeding, she's a small breed and past pup's first season (same breed) bleeding never lasted this long.

What making it worse is the fact I feel like I can't enjoy her company at the min, if I start fussing her you can guarantee she'll try humping my arm within 5 mins. It's relentless, I keep having to distract her with her ball or other toys. It's only me she humps, no other people or toys. 😩

Oh god. 😂 that sounds a right pain. I'll be flat on my back if my lab starts that, she's not light!

@TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams honestly once she starts it's like she's possessed 😩 I've never had a dog try to hump this much when in season! She's like a bloody barnacle, always hanging off of me.
