What age do puppies start to chill out?

JoshDog is 4 and was born lazy…she loves nothing more than a good sleep, followed by another snooze somewhere else, followed by a snooze somewhere else. You get the picture! Even as a puppy she was like this.

JoshPup however is a bundle of energy and has to have enforced naps or she keeps going like a bloody Duracell bunny…only problem is she’s getting massively overtired a lot, being very land shark and despite toilet training having gone well has had a couple of accidents in the last two days. She’s 14 weeks old so obviously still very much a baby. But give me hope-when will she settle and learn to understand her need to snooze?

They settle when you teach them how to settle. What breed is pup?

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 21/02/2023 19:35

What breed is she?

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 21/02/2023 19:38

She’s Jack Russell x Frenchie. Definitely more JRT in looks and nature.

You have to teach them where the off switch is and reward them when they choose to settle. At that age enforced naps too, they need to sleep for approx 16 hours a day

ilovesushi · 21/02/2023 21:54

Lots and lots and lots of naps. I think that helps with the bitey puppy behaviour more than anything else.

hellosunshineagainxxx · 21/02/2023 22:02

I mean jrt are 'on' a lot. My lab didn't settle down until she was about 2 years old and that was with a lot of training

RunningFromInsanity · 21/02/2023 22:03

2years for mine (large breed dog)

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 21/02/2023 22:48

Our beagle calmed down noticeably at two and considerably at four.

He's five now and really, really chilled out.

EdithStourton · 22/02/2023 03:07

It depends a lot on breed and character.

Our JRT followed the same pattern as @coffeecupsandwaxmelts says her beagle did: at two and again at 4.

We currently have a 2 yr old working line gundog from a breed that is notoriously late to mature. Still utterly batshit. Settles well and sleeps a lot but goes from 0-60 in a millisecond if anything interesting happens.

I have a 13 week pug puppy and she’s the hardest puppy I’ve ever had. I’m feeling resentful towards her that she is so so demanding. I’ve always had 2 dogs and as the older one gets old & crosses the rainbow bridge, I’ve got a puppy to keep the line one company and keep the continuity. The other have all been through the puppy stage obviously but within a few weeks are toilet trained and following the bigger dog learning etc. this time it’s all different. Older dog hates puppy, barks at her all day, puppy wants to be with me 24/7, which is ok but then she bites me continually. She doesn’t understand no or walking away, she just follows and keeps on. Toilet training not too bad, and I’ve started enforcing sleeps in crate as overstimulation seems to be a problem for her, although she yelps and yaps for at least 10 mins. Even when she’s asleep, if I move or there’s any different noise she’s fully awake. I’m exhausted and getting overwhelmed with her.

Of course she doesn't understand 'no', why would she? Puppy stage is hard but the main problems occur when they don't get enough sleep, enforcing naps is essential. Get a puppy pen so she can be safely contained when you need her to be. Again of course she wants to follow you, she has been separated from her mum and siblings so is seeking comfort.
Highly recommend the Dog Training Advice and Support group for lots of sensible advice and support for all dog behaviour.

GSD cross... it was about 12-15 months before she stopped doing my head in!

bamboonights · 28/02/2023 08:08

Two years but needs to be taught to chill.

But how do you teach them to chill? 😩😂

Sorry, I’d say 2 years too. And now at 4 and a half he’s very chilled.

Sushiii · 01/03/2023 20:49

I’m still waiting for my 17 year old Jack Russell to chill out 😅

Batcountry8 · 01/03/2023 20:55

I just knew this had to be about a Jack Russell type.

I was going to say my jrx is 6 and hasn't calmed the f down but at 17 the previous poster's jack is the winner 🏆

I hope mine gets to 17

😁

@EdithStourton , I may have bad news.

We currently have a nearly 4 yr old working line gundog from a breed that is notoriously late to mature. Still utterly batshit. Settles well and sleeps a lot but goes from 0-60 in a millisecond if anything interesting happens.

Hope you didn't get a GWP Grin

But how do you teach them to chill? 😩😂

You can teach a settle which is essentially just rewarding for being calm. Best captured so wait for pup to crash then reward. Reward reward reward. You can add in cues later. But dogs repeat what works for them. Anything JRT will respond much better to choice training rather than ‘do that now’. I say that as the treat dispenser of a working terrier 😉

Nootherwayout · 01/03/2023 22:00

One year old for our lab. He’s 2 this month and is the perfect dog now 🥰. The puppy stage is sooo hard!

😂I am familiar with GWPs.
All the HPRs are wonderful dogs, but capable of puppy-like batshittery for most of their lives.

Note to anyone looking for a puppy: do not get an HPR, esp not one from immediate working lines (or even madder: trialling lines) if you want a quiet life.
