I've seen it happen many times, the tiredness and pressure of a new baby and coping, usually means the dog gets rehomed quickly. So I wanted to share my experience if anyone finds themself in a similar situation.
We got a rescue dog years ago, he had a hard time in the kennels and it's taken a few good years and working with him to make sure he feels happy, confident and safe, but he's free bestest dog ever now.
I had DS in the pandemic and DH being a key worker meant I was effectively operating like a single parent, taking care of DS (who was a tough baby) and our rescue and with no family nearby to help.
It was so so tough.
DS is 2 now and the love he has for his best friend, our rescue is something I never imagined. He says good morning to him every day and gives him a big hug. Thu sure thick as thieves and already up to shenanigans. But today, DS was determined to 'walk' our dog (I say walk, he had help as our rescue is a healthy 30-35kg so he had some help).
He wouldn't let go of the lead once and kept chatting to him and showing him things on our walk.
Silly I know - but if you're ever in the same situation and assuming there is no safety element you need to consider, the end reward is incredible.
I'd love to hear any of your favourite kids and dog stories as clearly I'm feeling very soppy right now!
