To see DS and our rescue dog together today has made it all worth while

I've seen it happen many times, the tiredness and pressure of a new baby and coping, usually means the dog gets rehomed quickly. So I wanted to share my experience if anyone finds themself in a similar situation.

We got a rescue dog years ago, he had a hard time in the kennels and it's taken a few good years and working with him to make sure he feels happy, confident and safe, but he's free bestest dog ever now.

I had DS in the pandemic and DH being a key worker meant I was effectively operating like a single parent, taking care of DS (who was a tough baby) and our rescue and with no family nearby to help.

It was so so tough.

DS is 2 now and the love he has for his best friend, our rescue is something I never imagined. He says good morning to him every day and gives him a big hug. Thu sure thick as thieves and already up to shenanigans. But today, DS was determined to 'walk' our dog (I say walk, he had help as our rescue is a healthy 30-35kg so he had some help).

He wouldn't let go of the lead once and kept chatting to him and showing him things on our walk.

Silly I know - but if you're ever in the same situation and assuming there is no safety element you need to consider, the end reward is incredible.

I'd love to hear any of your favourite kids and dog stories as clearly I'm feeling very soppy right now!

Oh I love this. We rescued Ddog during lockdown. She was, hopefully, Ds's, friend. They are inseparable.

Ime the absolute best bit of being a dm is watching over the years the relationships between your dc and your ddogs. My ds 8 shares his bedtime story with at least 2 of our 4 ddogs. They hang on his every word when he reads.. He will absentmindedly give strokes without even looking up from his book. They also watch TV together.

Such a lovely thread. It takes me back to when my daughter was two or three and I moved back in with Mum and family dog. Daughter and dog were inseparable. I came across daughter telling dog about things that had happened and how she felt (like "and then Mum told me off, but it wasn't my fault was it?) while sharing an icecream.

unhealthy in one way (a lick for daughter and then a lick for dog), but on the other hand, daughter had a best mate what would never ever tell her secrets.

Oh this has made me all misty eyed. We have a rescue and the way he is with our 3 year old would make even the most stone hearted of people melt. He is the dogs favourite person and the feeling is mutual.

I absolutely cannot wait to see them grow up together. I truly believe getting a dog has been the best thing we've ever done for our child.

My grandparents rescued a beautiful Doberman shortly before I was born. I absolutely adored him, we used to snuggle by the fire and I would have 'serious chats' about the worst foods and annoying grown ups.
He died when I was six (poisoned - thanks neighbour who thought he was dangerous, he was not, I used to ride on his back!). Will never forget how much I loved that dog even though I've been lucky enough to have some since

Our beautiful dog - I am the smaller one in the stripey bikini! He was the wisest dog, would gently woof that 'all would be okay'

Clearly I can't proof read and my grammar went out the window while trying to type the post and doing the bed time routine BUT I love all these stories!!

I agree, it's so amazing watching them form an inseparable bond.

@Pebbles16 - what a rat bag neighbour!! I am so so sorry that happened to your family!
