Dog can't settle after neuter

My 1 yo malamute was neutered yesterday. He can't seem to settle at all, he did sleep well last night but wasn't been sleepy after the anaesthetic at all. He keeps pacing and then will lay down but whines a bit, is constantly biting/scratching his legs and back (not licking the wound as I don't let him) then starts pacing again. He doesn't have the cone on at the moment as just pulls it straight off, he wore it during the night and left it alone then.

Not sure what to do really. Does this mean he's in a lot of pain or do you think he's just uncomfortable? Thanks

It sounds more likely to be discomfort. Is there any sign of inflammation? Is he eating as normal? I would see how he is tomorrow and speak to the vet if he's still showing these signs; if his condition worsens, seek immediate advice.

Thank you. No inflammation, eating and drinking well and toileting all normal. He just seems restless and is pacing a lot. He did manage to have a nap for about an hour about 15 mins after i had posted but now back to how he was before.

I definitely wouldn't leave it if he gets worse. Our pug was so sleepy for first couple of days after his neuter so I was really surprised this one seems so active.

It takes them different ways, don't be worried by comparisons with your pug. If he's eating and toileting OK he's likely just a bit sore and it should wear off soon.

Thank you, that's reassuring.

Mine was done 4 weeks ago and was really unsettled for a few days (and nights). Lots of pacing and not being able to get comfortable, then woke up on day 4 acting like nothing had happened!

Patchworksack · 18/02/2023 12:31

What post op pain relief has he been given?

Campervangirl · 18/02/2023 12:42

You'd be uncomfortable if someone snipped your goolies off!
Give it a couple of days.
As long as he's eating, drinking etc and it's not inflamed he'll be fine, if you're really concerned give the vet a ring

PugInTheHouse · 18/02/2023 14:51

Thanks all. Lol @Campervangirl yes you're right, I was worried as he was so restless and I guess I thought he would be sleepy/resting so it panicked me but quite a few people I have spoken to have said similar. @DominoRules my friend who has his mum said the same last night, I think i was comparing too much to my other dog.

@Patchworksack He has Rhuemacom once a day.

He is eating and drinking fine, he is acting normally in general, just won't settle at all and usually he has long periods in the day where he sleeps, yesterday he slept for an hour and took 1.5hrs to settle at night (had the cone on then which makes him whine)

Wound looks fine, just so paranoid he won't heal properly as he's not resting.

I would keep the cone on. Just a minute chewing at the wound when you turn your back could cause big problems.

If it’s tied on with bandage try putting it on through his normal collar instead. That’s what we’ve had to do with our dog who has just had surgery

Thank you, I will try that with the collar.
