What could be wrong with my dog? Acting very strangely :(

My two year old cocker spaniel bitch is being very odd tonight. She is always, without exception, knackered and settling to sleep by 8pm.
Tonight she is restless. Agitated. Whining, and can't decide if she wants to be inside or outside. Frantically attached to a squeaky ball that she's never bothered with before (trotting around with it in her mouth, stressed if we try to take it off her. Scratching at her cushions rather than just flopping onto them as she normally would. When she does lie down, it's in a part of the lounge that she literally never lies down in!

I wish I knew what was bothering her so I could help!

It's actually quite similar to how she behaves when in season, but she only had her second season in December, so it's highly unlikely to be that?

Thanks all

Could possibly be a phantom pregnancy. Look it up and see if the symptoms resonate.
Contact your vet tomorrow just to be sure there's nothing else underlying Smile

Phantom pregnancy?

currantbee · 14/02/2023 21:10

The timing would fit for phantom pregnancy. The ball is likely a surrogate pup. I think the advice is to remove the objects she's trying to mother.

Luckymummytoone · 14/02/2023 21:11

My first thought was phantom pregnancy too :(

opalescent · 14/02/2023 21:15

Oh bless her 🥺 yes the symptoms fit perfectly. Do I need to do anything?

Oh sorry, just read the advice given properly. Yes I will look for an opportune moment to take the ball. Thanks all 😞

Mine is a neutered boy, but he does that when he needs to poop!

First thing I thought was phantom pregnancy. We had a rottie bitch prone to that, years ago, and that’s how she’d behave.

Spanielsarepainless · 15/02/2023 18:32

I have had two friends whose dogs behaved like this and they had eaten the end of a cannabis rollup.

Undisclosedlocation · 15/02/2023 18:37

Advice nowadays in a phantom is to leave her with the object, don’t try and remove it.
either way, she should see the vet as most if not all those symptoms could also mean pain.

Yep, phantom pregnancy - ours doesn't have 'babies' but is restless and whingy.

RejectedCitizenOfMoronia · 15/02/2023 18:59

My first thought was phantom pregnancy, and then i remembered my mixer who mothered my snoopy slippers and would only eat of the pups atr first. Cue me pretending to nom the food one slipper at a time.

Hope all of s well op

She hasn’t had a worming tablet today has she? Our dog acts like this after Drontal.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/02/2023 19:12

Here's a group of people with their puppies that resulted from phantom pregnancies.
