In improved condition, good mood and with a lot more fur.

The vet has officially diagnosed him as Really Cute.

I have to say, pre-existing dog is an absolute star. Just a rock-solid temperament. No jealousy, completely sensible with his untrained behaviours. He can bark right in her face and she'll just turn and walk away. She is of course getting much praise and fuss.

Do you live in a seaside town up north op? Saw an identical ddog on Friday!

iloveeverykindofcat · 12/02/2023 17:09

It is a seaside, but not up north! He's a Cardigan corgi with a pretty common coat pattern. There must be a few like him running around. He's bigger than he looks in photos. He's 16kg and that's just nicely slim. When we got him he was 14kg with his ribs showing out and no muscle in his thighs and shoulders.

Can absolutely see what Lizzy saw in her wonderful ddogs tbh!!

ilovesushi · 13/02/2023 20:57

what a beauty!

iloveeverykindofcat · 14/02/2023 05:22

He really wants to be a good boy, he's just had no guidance before. He also shows clear signs of having been hit and kicked in his past😢. He loves to be pet and brushed now though. When we first got him we could barely touch him.

How are you getting on with getting him used to stuff?

just because I was on the thread you posted before you got him 😊

iloveeverykindofcat · 14/02/2023 07:21

Stuff in the house and garden, great. His only problem is reflections, his own or anyone else's. Dogs outside not so good.

Ah, it was my dog that reacted to reflections too... he doesn’t do it anymore, I’m not going to lie, can’t remember exactly how long it took him to work out they weren’t anything he needed to stress about, lol, but it was fairly early on, so like at a guess a couple of months at the most?

He still freaks out about windows right enough, seeing one of us through the window if we’re on the opposite side from him registers as a stranger not us 😂

Dogs - if you’ve not dealt with that before is something worth getting a trainer in for a few sessions, it’s the sort of thing you can muddle along for ages by yourself just not quite getting right.

iloveeverykindofcat · 14/02/2023 08:10

We might well do, at least for a couple of sessions. 'Outside dogs' produce a mix of fear, excitement and aggression. He doesn't know whether to play or defend himself.

Pre-existing dog is so good. She'll play with him, and if he gets over the top she'll just turn away and remove herself from the situation. She's got a temperament you could stake your life on.

At the risk of being pedantic the queen had Pembroke corgis not Cardigans. The later are much less common and Im happy to be wrong about this but I don't think the OPs ones colour is that common in Cardigans unlike Pembroke's. Most are black brown/blond and white or brindle and white. I've owned both and in my admittedly not very knowledgable opinion Cardigans are far superior they are less neurotic and total clowns; they are basically a big dog personality on short legs. They are not only gorgeous looking dogs as the OP's clearly demonstrates they make great family dogs.

iloveeverykindofcat · 15/02/2023 09:32

Big dog voice too. He barks in baritone.

DysonBison · 16/02/2023 18:17

He is gorgeous! We have a Pembroke rescue corgi with the opposite problem - he's on a diet...

Aren't Cardigans now listed as Vulnerable Native Breed dogs? You'd have thought breeders would be super vigilant about who they let puppies go to when there are so few litters each year. I wonder if someone, somewhere, is missing him. A friend has a rare breed and they virtually had to submit to a DBS check before they were allowed anywhere near the puppies.

RobinGood · 16/02/2023 18:18

Aww what a happy wee face

Corgiowner · 17/02/2023 01:59

Cardigans are vulnerable I think in the UK about 120 are born every year, on a previous thread I think I suggested the OP contact the cardigan corgi society to see if she could find out who bred hers and maybe find out about his past it may not be difficult especially as I don't think the red ones are a very common colour. I believe she was told by the rescue organisation she got hers from that he was from a puppy farm. Personally I think this is unlikely as they are not a popular breed (although I guess he could be passed off as a Pembroke with that colouring and maybe Pembrokes are more likely to be puppy farmed?) and as already said those who breed them are very dedicated to the breed and IME are super vigilant scrutinise carefully any potential future owner.
Mine also has a big baritone woof.

Groutyonehereagain · 17/02/2023 02:14

My mum loved corgis, we always had a corgi or two when I grew up. You don’t see many these days, they are handsome dogs.

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/02/2023 05:25

@DysonBison Our Pembroke is a chunk. She's on a diet now, I think she gained the weight we were trying to put on the rescue boy. All the Pems have been very very food orientated. This boy is not. He likes his food well enough but he's definitely not greedy and will stop when he's had enough. He's also prone to colitis. He had a lot of diarrhea and some blood. Now he is on a salmon and potato kibble only and that has stopped, but the vet said he has to have 1 food only for 8 weeks and then we can try introducing other things.

We're not entirely sure of his background but it seems he was being used as a stud, or at least someone was trying to use him as a stud, and keeping him in a shed/on a chain. He has clearly been hit and kicked in the past and flinches if you make the wrong movement or raise an object near him 😢. He did well on his walk yesterday though. He met a very old, slow dog and didn't bark at it. He was still hyper-alert, but no barking and lunging. He also did very well getting in and out of the car.

People will unfortunately use valuable dogs in this way. Our Pem is actually a former breeding bitch from a breeder I'd describe as 'grey area'. Not quite a backyard breeder, but certainly not a good one. They did the bare minumum: she was kept indoors, walked on a lead, fed enough, and gotten vet attention when she needed it, but not shown affection or interest, and probably left in a crate too much. She was also bred too often. Nothing you could call the RSPCA about, but not a particularly happy life.

DysonBison · 17/02/2023 09:36

Poor, poor boy - but what a fantastic job you're doing, showing him how kind humans can be. He must feel as if he's woken up in heaven.

Our chunky wee Pem is our first corgi, and has a totally different personality to our previous dogs, so it's a learning curve for all of us. He's very impressive with a football!

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/02/2023 15:02

Thank you, we are working on it. His spirit isn't broken, for all his mistreatment. He now feels that the garden/house is his home, and when he gets back after a walk, he goes sprinting and leaping around in delight. Its lovely to see. I think he's young - I'd be surprised if he's even two.

He's lovely, but I was looking forward to a photo of his special "pattern cardigan"🤣🤣
