Dog attack

I read about the sad case in Redcar where a dog was attacked and seriously injured by 2 off lead dogs who didn't have collars on. Bystanders got injured trying to intervene. Does anyone have any tips if this were to happen ?

I was chased by a dog once (I was walking and not running if that makes any difference). Since the owner thought it was funny I smacked it across the nose with my umbrella. Seemed to do the trick. It slunk off. Owner was pissed off and aggressive so I threatened to smack him with it as well.

I'm scared of dogs so this is something that worries me. I'm a runner and lots of dogs seem to either get aggressive towards runners or chase them (or both) if they are not on a lead.

I obviously don't have dogs, but is there something I should be doing to avoid them trying to chase me? My husband was bitten out on a run and kicked the dog to get it off, the owner was obviously not happy and I personally wouldn't want to hurt an animal but what do you do?

Clearly the actual answer is for dogs to be kept on leads, but that's never happening.

Slow down or stop if the dog isn't returning to its owner. I hold my hand up - this was my dog once, but what he saw was a big bloke running full pelt at me on a deserted woodland trail and so went into protective mode by barking (no biting, I hasten to add). Sometimes just slowing down will give the owner time to put the lead on their dog.

Watching the rest of the thread with interest - this is something that really scares me. I've spent a lot of time keeping my dog on a lead and now have been working hard on solid recall.

My husband and German Shepherd were attacked over Xmas on a dog walk. My husband tried to kick the dog away but it bit him on the leg. Nothing serious but it could have been. He now does the dog walk with a stick that he uses as a walking stick but really it is his weapon should another attack happen. Not sure how much use it would really be but is better than nothing.
