Toilet training

Hi all, we brought dpup home 2 weeks ago. Toilet training was going well... fast forward the past 3 days. He is moving his bowels 4-6 times through the night.

I last toilet trained 13yrs ago and can't remember my old boy going this much through the night? His last meal is around 6pm at night and we go to sleep around 10:30 waking at 6am. Any suggestions.

That sounds a lot. What is he eating? It’s very easy to overfeed a puppy especially kibble when you factor in training treats on top

Yes look at how much food. We were recommended by our vet and also the breeder to go on body condition not numbers on the pack. Ours goes once per meal and not at all at night and never has. Just a wee.

He's on harringtons dry kibble. That's probably where I am going wrong, I let him graze as opposed to measuring.

Definitely measure. And take food away if uneaten. You could also move dinner time to earlier to avoid poo overnight.

Oh yes. That will be your problem.

Depends on your breed but we were advised to give a handful then if she ate it all offer a bit more. That’s a Border terrier. She’s a really good weight - can feel ribs but not see them. I’ve never weighed the food.

Four meals a day until 4 months. Harringtons has a lot of bulk in too so he may be pooing more. Mine came on JWB but I don’t like it as I feel it makes dogs greasy. I changed her to Arden Grange and she’s much better on it. I mix it with a bit of puppy forthglade.

My last dog needed twice the recommended amount for her size as she had a stinking metabolism. Amounts on packets are arbitrary I find. My cat is the same.

Times, we kept to the breeders times initially so 7 am, 12 pm, 4 pm and 8 pm. She then had a small snack chew thing or small kong later on. We never had any night time poos just wees.

At 4 months we dropped the 8 pm and moved the 12 to 1 and 4 to 5 with a filled kong mid evening to keep her awake so she’ll sleep all night. She’s coming up to 6 pm so we’ll just drop the 1 pm then.

You have to be flexible with feeding puppies as you should be giving lots of treats (in tiny pieces - I can make a Wagg treat do 6 rewards 😂) so need to adjust accordingly.

6 pm - 6 months.

Hi all thanks for your comments. He is an American bulldog. I am going to measure firstly and hope this helps. I'll get back once I've trialed this. Thanks

Yep - you've answered your own question really Grin

Set mealtimes and no grazing. I would also consider adding wet food.
