Good car for labs - crate recommendations also

Looking to change our car any recommendations for a good car that works with a lab? He needs to be crated so he doesn't eat the car! Also need boot space... Maybe a estate or a 4x4 style?

You won't need a huge boot for one lab, so a standard estate would work.

TransK9 travel crates are very good.

Dacia Duster has a big boot and a large crate (Pets at Home, very solid crate) fits. Large German Shepherd and a Staffie travel together in mine.

For my 2 labs the main thing has been headroom so they can sit up or turn around. So many estates and SUVs have quite big slopes on the boots.
I have had success with BMW 3 series touring ( estate) which has a bespoke guard and separator in the boot area.

We have a Vw Troc it seems to work well for our lively active 22 month lab

I've currently got my 6 month old lab on the back seat of an Audi TT! Fortunately he doesn't chew, and we have put a car seat cover and his fluffy donut bed in there. Clip his harness to a seatbelt lead thingy and we're away! There's still going to be room for him in there when he's bigger. I'm glad it's worked out because I thought I'd have to change my car! Couldn't fit a crate in though...

We have a Hyundai Tucson, but our lab cross doesn't need a crate or even a back seat guard. It is plenty roomy though.

But if you need a crate then the Hyundai santa fe is a good bet.

Its a good idea to have a crate or back seat guard (not because your dog may jump over) but in the event of a crash the dog will fly through the car and cause major damage to passengers of themselves.

A tragic case still haunts me of a gsd flying through the car in a rear end crash which killed a colleague who was driving. Broke her neck instantly

XC60 or if you need more boot space XC90

caramac04 · 06/02/2023 07:58

@ShouldIknowthisalready I was glad to have a crate when we were rear ended. Couldn’t actually open the boot for a good half an hour due to damage. We had been shunted several feet forward and into another car. Fortunately the dogs were absolutely fine thank goodness and so were everyone involved. Crate space was my main criteria when replacing my Xafira.

We have a Dacia Logan MCV. The boot is massive, fitting a large crate easily with plenty of headroom, and it’s relatively low to the ground so our dog can jump in and out without excessive impact on his joints. It’s not a pretty or fancy car, but it is very practical.

I have two uncrated massive labs in the back of a Citroën Picasso- on the back seat. Occasionally I hoover it out. Probably not what you were looking for though
