One greyhound or two?

We recently rehomed a retired greyhound. He has settled in well and is an absolute joy. He is nearly 6 years old. He has been with us just over a month. He's not our first greyhound - we lost our first girl in June last year . We are now considering whether to get another greyhound to join him. Please hit me with your positives and negatives to help us make the decision.

I have 2, I got my second because my first was horribly abused and too traumatised to even leave the house. Our second was confident and helped him immeasurably.

it’s hard having 2, in terms of taking them out in the car as they’re so bloody big. The positives outweigh the negatives though. They do keep each other company and play nicely together.

The main difficulty with having two is the cost, really - double food, vet bills, insurance, vaccinations, equipment, bed, clothes etc.

Also if you go away, you'll be paying more for kennels or boarding - and not all holiday homes etc. allow two dogs, some restrict you to one. Similarly if you need a dog walker, two will cost more than one.

Day-to-day, does yours walk nicely on a lead? Could you manage two if they both decided to chase or react at the same time? Is your car big enough to fit them both in safely?

I've never had two dogs because all of the above puts me off Grin

We are a multi dog home and love it.

Cons
Money - everything will obviously cost more insurance food vets etc
Space - might have to get a bigger car...
Mess - there will be more dog hairs around and mud
The dogs will teach each other their bad habits not their good habits --Smile
Some dogs do not want dog company

Pros
Loads of dog company
Live is too short not to have more than one dog
Never want to be without a dog so having loads means that wont happen
Dogs are a lifestyle that I enjoy and multi dogs increase this
Having dogs are various stages of live is great - the youngster to train, the sensible middle aged dog who is up for everything and beautifully trained to the oldie who wants to lie on the sofa and get cuddles.
Some of the dogs like other dog company

But greyhounds are soooooo easy to live with I think more than 2 is the way to go.

Seriously though OP I would wait a bit until your original dog has settled in a bit. Rescue dogs do tend to "develop" and the their true character can take time to appear. I would give it a bit more time (to appear sensible) and then go and get the 2nd one

The thing about greyhounds is (assuming ex racing) that they have spent their whole lives around other greys. They tend to just fit together easily.

I got my second 10 months after the first just because I felt like they'd be good company for each other (we actually already had a crossbreed).

It's worked really well and usually a second grey just fits in to the house without much bother.

I'm loving your pro list @ShouldIknowthisalready !! We can absorb the costs of another dog. Space in the house/garden is not an issue but it will be a struggle to fit 2 greyhounds in our campervan.
@beachybed how much more space do 2 greys take up especially when thinking about sleeping arrangements? He is an ex-racer and was living with female kennel mate before he came home with us. I can't help thinking he would be happier with a companion to snuggle up with.
It probably makes sense to wait a little longer....

Well our are sofa surfers so they do like to spread out. I could spam the thread with many photos!

They do like to be near each other. They do like the 'company' of each other?

So yes in terms of space they do take up more. We don't really take them out in the car although we have a 4x4 that's big enough.

They don't pull on the lead so are lovely to walk together.
