What breed do I go for?

I'm looking for a medium-large breed.

Intelligent/trainable, good with kids and ideally not an excessive malter.

I'd like to be able to train them to speak, to bark at any potential intruders.

Thank you!

Labrador would fit the bill. Not sure about the moulting part (!) but otherwise they are trainable, happy, great with kids and lovely all round family dogs.

I am on my third Labrador. If you choose a decent breeder, who has done all the relevant health and DNA testing, you can't go wrong. Expect to pay a bit as proper breeding doesn't come cheap. Wonderful temperament and easy to train. My first one 'spoke ' but the next two have rarely barked so I couldn't teach them. As they and crossed with a GR, are often used as guide or assistance dogs, people tend to be less wary and smile at your dog in the street!

Thank you!

I'd also consider an adult/rescue but the only issue is DS being 4.

Labrador or standard poodle would fit the bill nicely.

Our Labradors always barked when visitors approached the house. They sounded fierce but were soft enough to be bullied by our rabbit.

They have been the most rewarding pets and have helped foster a number of distressed children.
