Can someone tell me the average weight of a male labrador at 11 months old. Or if you have a lab roughly the same age what do they weight? Trying to work out if my lab is small for his age?

Four kg in that time frame is normal, check for your self

Take and post a photo OP. Preferably side on.

If you think he’s ‘stocky’ then he’s definitely not underweight, so why are you worried? Is it height you’re concerned about? He’s probably at his adult height by 11 months.

He can go 1 or 2 days without touching his food

Does he really not eat at all, though? What did the vet say about that?

NoSquirrels · 25/01/2023 19:33

I’m calm! Are you, OP?

Its just that if he’s stocky i.e. opposite of skinny, then it’s strange to focus on his growth, as he’s obviously growing & healthy. But not eating at all for 2+ days is really unusual so that’s more the concern. Has he always been picky?

TheShiningPup · 25/01/2023 19:34

He must be eating enough since he isn't wasting away. Different dogs, even of the same breed, can have different calorie requirements. I know one that would put on weight if given more than 60% of food as per guidelines and others that need twice as much.

Our female lab has been the same weight since she was 9 months, she's now two. I think males tend to grow for a bit longer but they don't tend to grow that much more after 1.

Shannith · 25/01/2023 19:39

My 2 1/2 year old working female is 18.5kg. She was at the vet's yesterday and I was told she's the perfect weight.

Labs are not supposed to be chunky or sturdy - especially working lines. Mine's finely built and super fit.

People have a image in their head of what ideal looks like that is actually pretty overweight.

Ditto lots of show horses by that's another can of worms.

I’ve got a 7.5 month bitch from working lines. She was the smallest in the litter and is just under 19kg

My lab is 3 and from working lines and she is dinky and 21kg. Also a bit fussy food wise.

LBF2020 · 25/01/2023 19:50

This is really interesting, I don't have a lab but a golden retriever. He is very tall, built like a muscly whippet under the floof. He weighs 29kg at 2 years old, so I am surprised to hear some labs are over 35kg as I always thought they are much smaller than goldies.
However, I do know that there can be a massive variation in types, i too would expect him to score at 2.5 on the chart posted above.

I remember going out for lunch with our pup when he was 10ish weeks, we saw a family with a lab and we got talking to them. The dog was very overweight and had elbow callouses (presumably from the extra weight when he was laying down?) he honestly looked like a 10 yr old dog. From that moment I thought I'd do everything in my power to keep my dogs fit. I do also have an elderly dog who really struggles with her weight, so I understand it isn't easy!

ShouldIknowthisalready · 25/01/2023 20:29

Well I have upset you already so here goes again!

You have said to use he is 11 months
He is stocky
He is not eating
he weights more than an average full grown lab. (although some labs can be very tall so weight would be more)

11 months old labs are rarely stocky - they are still growing so can be a bit gangly. Most labs you see are overweight the andrex puppy is obese.

He is not eating - but putting on weight...... he is eating enough maybe too much hence he is not hungry some of the time

You say he weight is ok

Nothing to worry about then

Well, he must be eating something or he wouldn't have put 4 kilos on since his last vet visit.

Diynoidea · 25/01/2023 20:36

26kg

Diynoidea · 25/01/2023 20:43

Also surprised for a young dog to be described as stocky, should be lanky at that age

Slobbet · 25/01/2023 20:49

Young dogs tend to be lanky.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 25/01/2023 20:55

I have a working lines Labrador who has hovered between 31- 33kg his entire life. He has a good waist and tuck, despite getting up there in years.

He isn’t massively tall, but he is deep chested. He was extremely fast in his younger day, and very athletic, could jump onto the dinner table from resting position ( was not encouraged I hasten to add)

Maybe your dog will have a growth spurt. I would be guided by what I see. - Waist, tuck, ribs; activity levels, digestion etc. If that looks fine, don’t worry too much about his eating patterns.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 25/01/2023 20:57

Sorry, meant to add, if it’s not adding up to,you, ask for a thyroid test.

Overrunwithlego · 25/01/2023 20:59

We also have a dinky lady chocolate lab. I was looking at weight charts and thinking she needing feeding up, so was getting a bit lax on treats etc. During a vet visit, the vet politely told us she was getting a bit chunky and whilst still a 3 on that chart she was starting to head towards a 4. She was 22kg and the vet suggested looking at her she needed to loose a couple of kilos and around 20kg would be her ideal weight. So I think it really does vary depending on stature and the vet said go by how they look more than how much they weigh. Poor doggo is now on a Post Christmas diet and doesn’t know what has happened 😂

Overrunwithlego · 25/01/2023 21:02

Forgot to say she is very nearly 1.

chronictonic · 25/01/2023 21:10

My non 'working' working line bitch is 15 months and weighs 23kg. She was the smallest of the litter and hasn't had a season yet.

Orangesare · 25/01/2023 21:16

Ex working lab 26kg dog. Vet always says he’s the ideal weight.
used to have a show lines bitch and she was always about 28kg. She was a big lab but not fat.

Got2besoon · 25/01/2023 21:25

Numbers mean nothing (except when comparing to previous weights of the same dog).

Working Labs will have different heights/builds.

Use the body condition score chart PP posted.

Studies have shown that Labs who were always a little underweight have the best quality of life and suffer from less joint disease when older.

Mentallydrainedmum · 25/01/2023 22:09

@ShouldIknowthisalready I don't remember you so you cant have upset me that much. He's not gangly, he is stocky (regardless of him only being 11 months)
Why can't anyone ask an innocent question on MN without people getting passive aggresive? Keep that nonesense for the AIBU section I asked what the average lab weight was. I didn't mean to offend anyone!

Thankyou too everyone that has answered the question.

Spanielsarepainless · 26/01/2023 12:36

All three of mine have been working bred. First was about 30kg, second 31kg and cobby, and my new boy, 14 months old is 25 kg.

Leeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 26/01/2023 16:07

I've got a 4 year old working line lab. Trying to think back, sure he was around 29-30kgs at that age and pretty muscular. He as an adult got up to 32kgs and was a bit chubby. However he is ill now & we struggle to keep weight on him. He's currently sitting at 29.5kgs and is a little underweight. He looks ideal at 31kgs. A lot depends on how muscular they are. My last labs weighed anywhere from 27-29kgs and were ideal, however the one I have now is more muscular than them so actually looks a lot thinner

Sunflowers765 · 26/01/2023 16:32

I guess they all vary. Mine is only 5 months and weighs 15kg. His siblings weigh between 16 - 22kg! Mines like a little whippet!
