In case anyone else has a fusspot eater…

Twatdog has become increasingly fussy with her food.
Put her dinner down at 6pm.
Not even a sniff of interest.
Out of frustration, had an idea to re-serve it on a plate rather than her usual bowl.
She ate it all up in about 2 minutes 🙄 so was obviously hungry.

Just thought I’d share in case anyone else is in the same boat.

Any other tips would be very welcome!

That's interesting. Our cats would never drink out of their water bowl until one day I put down a large pyrex bowl and they drank out of it happily. I wondered if it was something to do with their whiskers touching the sides of the bowl!?

flagpole · 24/01/2023 08:24

I've read about this and it's definitely a thing. My dogs will only eat off a plate (or the floor Envy) i there is a view that Some survival instinct means they want to be able to see any approaching dangers whilst eating. A bowl covers their eyes/blocks their view more than a plate.

BestIsWest · 24/01/2023 08:27

Mine will only eat from a large square silicone dish. Ceramic and metal are too noisy and move about on the floor apparently. Although he will steal from our other dog’s metal bowl.

ilovesushi · 24/01/2023 20:21

@flagpole that makes sense as the pyrex bowl is transparent!

NotQuiteUsual · 24/01/2023 20:51

My fussy dog will only eat out of a pink, plastic mixing bowl. I live in fear of Asda discontinuing it as it needs replacing fairly often being plastic. But it really is all she will accept. She likes it so much she just carries it around the house sometimes.

This is hilarious! 😂

I have a twatdog too. Sniffs his food and pads away like we're trying to feed him actual shit. May try the plate.

Our rescue dog had to be taught how to eat from a bowl as she'd only ever had dried food thrown into her general area. That is fine for scatter feeding and enrichment, but she doesn't like dried food much and it now gets mixed with wet food and water so slathering the floor wasn't going to work for long!

We also had to change the metal water bowl for a (very expensive) ceramic bowl with a silicone base. Metal was too noisy and made her jump if her collar pinged it.....

WormEater · 24/01/2023 21:12

Ours much prefers to steal the cats food.
[Glances around to check dog is not reading this over my shoulder]
In the past I may have been known to put her dog food in a cat bowl and leave it on top of the cat's feeding unit 🤫

Twatdog ate off the plate again!

But, (knowing just how much of a twat she can be) I am not holding my breath for long term success as I’m sure the novelty will soon wear off so I’m compiling a shopping list…

*Large Pyrex bowl

*Large square silicone dish

*Asda Pink plastic mixing bowl.
@NotQuiteUsual I love that is very specific 😂 - have you attempted any other
colours?

*Ceramic bowl with silicone base

*Cat food

Do you know what, my Twatdog actually has no problem eating fresh rabbit poo in the fields so you maybe onto something there!
And I feel your pain, I’ve seen that exact look of contempt when presenting her majesty with her daily victuals 😒

😂 at the rabbit poo. Mine tried to eat his own vomit once. I only just got to him in time.

We also find that if we remove something from the fridge and pretend to chop it on our chopping board he will think it's human food and therefore fit for doggy consumption.

@HandbagsnGladrags
😂 That’s hilarious. They’ve got our numbers alright, these pampered pooches!
Thanks for the tip, it’s on the list 🤣

Mine has a slow feeder.

When he's finished he brings it to me, Oliver style in protest

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 27/01/2023 00:12

Our spaniel didn't like eating breakfast alone. Meals are social occasions😁

He would ignore a dish put down in the morning rush to get to work/school. (It would stay untouched all day.)

However if he was served alongside another eater- he would lick the dish clean.

Aria20 · 27/01/2023 09:55

These are funny mine is the same! She prefers to eat off a lick mat - it's kibble mixed with a little wet food so not really licking! I tried a silicone lick bowl same concept as lick mat but bowl shaped - she's used it only a handful of times.

She will occasionally eat from snuffle mat or puzzle toy but this is messy as the kibble is mixed with wet. She will sometimes eat out of an old egg box. She'll sometimes eat off the floor or out of my hand again messy. I tried scattering in the garden and birds bloody ate it Grin

She does like her food - we've tried many combinations over the past 2 years and this is a combination she does consistently eat, she's just fussy! Also not a morning dog, doesn't bother with breakfast will eat around lunch time and then evening.

I'm fine with working around her funny ways but when she went to home border last year when we were on holiday she came back skinny as obviously they put the food down in morning and then take away if they don't eat so other dogs don't get it so she was basically only eating dinner for a week.
