Puppy in season, when to spay?

Our toy Cockapoo, 8 months, is 2 weeks into her first season. She has bled quite a lot, has a really swollen vulva and her nipples are very pronounced at the moment. She is humping every cushion she can find lol. We aren't planning on breeding from her, we've kept her well away from all dogs on walks so hopefully there will be no phantom pregnancy.

My question is, when will we be able to get her spayed? Once her swollen vulva has gone down or at least a few months? She weighs just over 6kg, if that's important.

Thanks everyone.

3 months after the season is finished - that’s the standard vet advice

The ideal time is usually around 3 months after the season as this is midway between the seasons. It might be worth contacting your vet now as some book operations quite far in advance.

Thank you! She has a check up at the vets in a few weeks so I'll book her in then. We get a 20% discount through the pet health club. Looks like we're looking at an Easter operation then!

Is there anything that signals the season has finished? She has bled for about 16 days and it will be 3 weeks on Wednesday since the first drops of blood. Could it last longer than 4 weeks?

Anyone?

I'm no expert as I've only had my pup for 16 months but she was spayed last week. From what I understand, the season is over about 2/3 weeks after the bleeding stops. I think mine bled for 2 weeks. My vet wouldn't spay until 4 months after she stopped bleeding although I know this varies. It was a relief to get it done to be honest, although she kept herself clean and the bleeding wasn't too bad. I didn't like having to plan her walks on whether I thought other dogs would be around. A season would normally last about three weeks. Just remember that keeping her away from other dogs won’t necessarily prevent a phantom pregnancy. And watch out for any sign of pyometra up until she’s spayed.

When it comes to the spay, ask your vet about keyhole surgery. Really speeds up recovery time, which may be a bonus if you have a busy Easter.
Not all vets can offer it, but ours will refer out to a different surgery if keyhole is the best option for the bitch.

I reckon the season to be over when the bleeding has stopped, and the vulva is shrinking back down.

As for spaying, I prefer to wait until my dog is fully adult, physically and mentally. I have a late-maturing breed and the last one was four when we had her done. I'd probably not wait so long with a smaller dog, but do consider what you want from her in terms of maturity.
