Newfoundland, St Bernard or Leonberger?

Landseer · 20/01/2023 20:49

Two adults in the house, no kids but small grandchild stays here weekly.
I work from home, not massively active but do enjoy an hours walk daily and longish walks in the countryside/forest on a weekend.

Dog must be excellent with children
Dog must be reliable with other animals

Please pick a breed for me between these 3 because I can’t 😂

Bernese mountain dog!

I was going to say this!

Largethighsbadeyes · 21/01/2023 18:40

I said it on your other thread OP but bernese is the way to go.

piggijg · 21/01/2023 18:58

If you do go Bernese you'll have to be so picky about the breeder and the genetic tests.

MiniTheMinx · 21/01/2023 19:13

Great Dane. Personally I couldn't cope with all the fur from your other choices. I don't like my home to stink of damp dog, so any long haired breed with any affinity for water would be a no.

crinklemum2 · 21/01/2023 19:27

None of the above? Is there a reason you want a giant dog? My parents have a Newfoundland and every time it turns it's head it coats the walls in slobber Envy

I'm a Labrador mum and they are excellent companions, gentle and love children but they are hard work as pups and need good, consistent training and lots of mental stimulation.

Obvious age old disclaimer that no dog, regardless of breed, should be left alone with young children.

crinklemum2 · 21/01/2023 19:30

Just to add, my parents live by the sea and can't walk their Newfoundland on the beach because if he sees a swimmer he tries to save them!

Chimna · 21/01/2023 19:41

I noticed you say you have grand children. I would consider your age and coping with a big dog as you age. My DM's retriever was wonderful with my DS. I seriously recommend a retriver, they have a fabulous personality if you're happy to put the work in. Ours was incredibly cheeky and strong minded but in such a lovable wonderful way. I've never met another dog like him.

Pleasenomorecheese · 21/01/2023 19:42

Have you considered a giant schnauzer. They are so good natured and protective of their family. If you have their hair stripped when groomed they barely drop any hair. We’ve had two and (both male) and they were just the most amazing dogs. Great to train and have at home. Neighbours had newfoundlands and our dog was same in height, but no big hair or slobber 😂

Actionfilm · 21/01/2023 22:05

I love dogs but have never met a dog from one of those breeds that I liked. I do not get the appeal at all.

yorkshireteapot9 · 08/03/2024 19:00

Realise this is an old post OP, but did you eventually decide on breed? I can't believe I've just found this thread as I considered similar breeds for a couple of years, eventually settling on a Landseer Newfoundland. She's not as laid back as I thought around people - she's almost too friendly, I've put my heart and soul into training her and she doesn't jump and can walk her on the lead on my little finger, bit God, is she stubborn! I've had a GR when younger and he was probably the most perfect dog, ever, but she will protect me and I love that!

yorkshireteapot9 · 08/03/2024 19:01

Oh and no drooling at all in the house, only on a walk, really. I just catch it on my welly, or wipe with a tissue 😀

Strokethefurrywall · 08/03/2024 19:04

Leonberger for me! Bulletproof with children but not as drooly as Newfs.
My order of preference: Leo, Newfoundland, St Bernard.
But honestly, there's not much in it! When I move back to a more temperate climate I'll be getting a Leo, my favorite dogs!

Strokethefurrywall · 08/03/2024 19:07

Sorry, realised it's a zombie

BoobyDazzler · 08/03/2024 19:07

I’ve never met a Leonburger or a St Bernard and the only Newfoundland I know is stubborn as hell, has proved impossible to train and thus can’t go off lead and has never had a healthy day in its life, is uninsurable due to all the the exclusions and slobbers and sheds hair absolutely everywhere.

Vettrianofan · 08/03/2024 19:08

They are all fantastic. Would be lost without my Saint.

TerfTalking · 08/03/2024 19:10

How big is your house OP? There was a New Foundland in the vets a Few weeks ago and I could smell dog before I opened the door. I nearly threw up when I had to sit inside, and I can cope with a sweaty Labrador but that NF odour was something else,

My Newfie is also overly friendly, but happily for her almost everyone we meet on a walk wants to give her a cuddle.

How old is yours now? Our girl is 5 and FINALLY calm like they're supposed to be, though she still behaves like a puppy when she's excited.

Tel12 · 08/03/2024 19:12

Had a pug x jr when GC where small. Excellent dog and they played together well. In fact they're all in their teens now, dog too. I'm wondering if a smaller breed might be better with young children,? Plus all that slobber with some breeds?

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 08/03/2024 19:18

Have you had a dog before?
What can you offer the dog?
How much walking do you want to do?
How much money do you have? and how much are prepared to spend on the dog?
How much hair and slobber and smell do you want to deal with.
Are you happy to go to a groomer regularly?
How old are you? Are you fit?
Do you mind hair? There’ll be a ton.

You’ve chosen rather extreme breeds, that require a ton of work.

“Dog must be excellent with children
Dog must be reliable with other animals”

I have a lab. He’s the best boy, he’s 13 now. Land shark teenager though, they’ll bite you and draw blood. Chew everything, challenge you. Hair, don’t even get me started.
He would kill a cat.
Good with other dogs.

Ensure you do your homework, there have been so many I hate my puppy, I need to rehome my puppy, puppy blues posts lately.

@yorkshireteapot9 you can’t resurrect a thread and not post a pic!

I met a bronze landseer for the first time recently. Totally stunning.
