I don't know what I was thinking really. I saw some dry food (James Wellbeloved which he's had before) on special offer so bought it. He had been eating Harringtons but we ran out and I just went straight onto the new stuff without thinking about it. He's just over 18 months old.

This was Wednesday night.

Today he's got a really dodgy tummy. Making very strange noises and he's eating a lot of grass. He seems generally unsettled. It's not helped by the fact that I've got the flu so he hasn't been walked as much as usual and can't go out today until DH finishes work.

He's wanted to be in and out of the garden all day, and pooed on the floor a few minutes after he came back in. It wasn't diarrhoea but it was softer than usual with some grass too (sorry TMI).

I feel guilty. What do I do. Do I just continue with this new food now I've started (he hasn't eaten today). Rice for a few days and then carry on? Go back to original food (although I bought a MASSIVE sack of this one)

I've given him some Pro Kolin.

I feel like a terrible pet owner.

Go back to the original food as soon as possible. If you want to use up the new food you can mix a bit in but you need to measure and make up percentages. I.e for the next few days 90% old and 10% new. We spend a month doing this until new food is 100% gradually. Hope you can get your old food soon !

Hmm, if the issues are only appearing 48 hours later, I suspect it's not the food.

Are you sure he hasn't eaten anything he shouldn't have done?

fruitstick · 20/01/2023 16:06

Oh he may have done. He's a spaniel so anything is possible.

I would feed chicken/rice till he's better, then give him the old food and mix the new one as per the recommended amounts.

My pug has always been able to change food with no issues (probably due to the fact he's so greedy that he eats anything and everything) we did do it properly at first but the food the breeder sent didn't really agree with him and he disliked the next one we tried (literally only thing he has ever not liked) so I just gave him a new one straight off so it's not always an issue. Same with new pup, he has gone off his food so I am mixing bigger amounts than I should but he seems OK and at least he's eating.

I have swapped straight from one kibble to another with no issues. It's more of a problem going from wet to kibble or vice versa. Sounds like your boy has eaten something dire!

PritiPatelsMaker · 22/01/2023 09:08

I think that he's probably picked something up on a walk as well. We've swapped from one kibble to another without any problems in the same situation without any problems and our DDog is usually sensitive.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 22/01/2023 09:21

How is he now @fruitstick?

fruitstick · 22/01/2023 09:23

He's fine. I've been ill so didn't manage to change his food back but I would say he's back to normal.

I think it was probably something rancid he ate in the woods.

Which is fortunate as I have a 15kg sack of the new stuff 😬
