Cold pressed raw. Does it carry the same risks as raw?

My 4 year old bichon is extremely fussy. She’s fed fresh food mixed with dry kibble but is now leaving most of her meals or refusing to eat it.

I’d like to try her on a wet pate type food mixed with dry cold pressed raw. Full raw is not suitable for our family.

Does cold pressed raw carry the same risks?

What risks? Raw is fine for dogs, their intestines are a lot shorter than humans so food passes quicker therefore bacteria doesn’t form so is safe. My dog doesn’t like raw as in raw meat in his bowl, but he loves Natures Menu in pouches. It says lightly steamed on the pack, so I presumed it was cooked, but it is apparently raw.

The risks of raw are to do with bacteria before it’s eaten. Storage and prep need to be pretty fastidious.
No cold pressed doesn’t have the same risks. I like Huntland and Wilson’s

From my very limited research on raw, it seems the dog can secrete the bacteria found in raw meat in their saliva and excrement. I have young children and although she’s not allowed to lick their faces, she does lick them and I’m concerned about a raw diet.

If cold pressed is “safer” , I’d like to try that.

@Mindymomo I thought natures menu pouches were cooked wet? Is there a difference between the original and country hunter ? (Both natures menu) I tried country hunter pouches but they really upset her tummy.

We feed raw but if we are travelling so don’t have access to a separate freezer or ddog goes to stay with his Auntie while we go away I give him Forthglade on the advice of our raw food provider, they also do a dry food that is “raw equivalent” apparently

RoomWithAPew · 20/01/2023 10:22

I’ve tried her with Forthglade too but it upset her tummy. Is it possible too high a protein content could cause tummy upset?

Country Hunter has 80% proteins whereas Natures Menu Original has 60% . Maybe I should try her on the lower protein content ?

Just experiment with various complete foods, raw is fashionable but isn't for everyone. My ddog is currently on trout and potato, local pet shop own brand and is thriving, it's dry food. For a treat we give cut up meat scraps (human food)

Cold pressed food is cooked at very low temperatures so that the nutrients are not altered.

There will be less bacteria as the food has been cooked.

It can be kept for 8 months unlike raw food

Is your dog getting enough exercise? My girl can be super malaise re her food but she always eats if she's worked up enough hunger.

I also cut her to once a day too, so she's ready for it, she's fed around 5pm.

I feed her butternut box, she has lots of variation to her diet. Also I put her food in the microwave for a bit first to heat it up, the heat releases more flavour/smell and she gobbles it up.

😋

Also, we tried raw for a while. She loved it. We did about 8/9 months on it but I got creeped out by her licking my kids! She's a licky dog and it felt horrible me having to tell her off for wanting to show love to us. So I understand your concerns re raw completely!!

ShouldIknowthisalready · 20/01/2023 10:34

It is unlikely that a high protein food would cause an upset stomach but it could be the type of protein or the amount being feed.

Country Hunter does not have 80% protein. It has 80% duck but the protein is about 12% I think.

Meat percentage does not equal protein level

Forthglade has about 75% meat content but that is only 11% protein
