Poo o clock

Hi dog fans,

Apologies if this is a stupid question but what is a normal poo frequency for a 7 month old pup? Dogface has been out every 2h from 3.30am and pooed every single time, once inside when I missed the 2h deadline by 10 mins. It just seems like an awful lot of pooing. We've weighed his food to make sure we're not feeding too much on advice of dog trainer. He's just constantly needing to poo. Sorry. Not a poo troll, and poo is normal consistency etc, just so much of it 😕

What’s the breed, what are you feeding him and how much? Too many people go by the recommended guidelines on the food packet, when some greedy breeds eat whatever’s put in front of them and could practically live off air. Most of what you’re feeding him is coming out the other end for a reason

desperadodogface · 19/01/2023 22:48

Cavapoo. On dry supermarket food based on weight instructions on pack. We don't exceed measured portions yet he still always seems famished and is quite skinny- spine bones sticking out a bit which I put down to growth spurt but he'd eat wat more than we feed if we gave it to him

What are you finding him ? How much are you feeding him ? I have three dogs and they only do three a day each. X

shimmerbubbles · 19/01/2023 22:50

So pooing every 2 hours is a regular thing for him? Even overnight? Or is this a new thing?

I'd try a different food - if what you have him on is full of fillers it'll be going right through him.

I'd also get him checked out at the vet because pooping that often isn't normal.

talkingmorenonsense · 19/01/2023 22:51

Try adding some All Bran to his food.

Copperoliverbear · 19/01/2023 22:52

Maybe try a better quality puppy dry food he may not be getting enough nutrients from the one he's is on and if he's pooing it all out he isn't going to gain weight.
It seems like that brand doesn't agree with him.
Also if you change his food you have to transition them over. X

AdventFridgeOfShame · 19/01/2023 22:55

Somewhere on your bag of food there is be analytical components information, looks like this:
Protein 28.0%, Oil/fat 16.0%, Fibre 3.0%, Ash 6.5%,

What numbers do you have?

Supermarkets are not renowned for brilliant puppy food. The are other sensible priced options.

Eyesopenwideawake · 19/01/2023 22:57

Not normal. Our 6 month old is clean overnight from 10pm to 7pm and has been for several weeks. Fed adult kibble with the occasional raw egg (twice a week). Growing like a weed.

StillMedusa · 19/01/2023 23:31

Not normal.
Stop feeding him supermarket kibble.. it's absolute rubbish!
Go on Allaboutdogfood site and read up, and pick a dry food with a high meat content and not full of rubbish fillers (personally I like Canagan, but there are plenty of good ones out there, supermarket kibble is very poor nutrician which may well be why he;s hungry and thin)
Transition him gradually.

Also take him to the vets in case he has colitis, or allergies. Most healthy dogs poo twice a day or so, but definitely not that often.

Usergjdksndjsn · 19/01/2023 23:33

Feed him something else, make sure it’s puppy food as well not just any dog food
try AVA from pets at home, it’s fairly affordable and healthier than most in its price bracket

Usergjdksndjsn · 19/01/2023 23:34

Are you up to date on worming as well?

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 20/01/2023 07:18

Is he up to date on worming?

What you describe is absolutely not normal. Puppies do "go" more often than adult dogs but that's only because they have lots of small meals - it doesn't mean they should go every two hours.

I would recommend a vet check (take in a stool sample) to make sure he has no bugs or bacteria in his poo - then look at allergens. Lots of dogs are intolerant to chicken which is present in most foods, especially cheap supermarket brands.

He needs a high quality puppy food.

Coffeecreme · 20/01/2023 07:22

i doubt you can just change the food though
you need to do it gradually
what about plain rice for a day

Coffeecreme · 20/01/2023 07:24

and at 7 months should he still need puppy food?

Suzi888 · 20/01/2023 07:27

Have you tried Chappie? Affordable food, vets recommend.
Bakers is not great, I gave it to my Lab once (postal delays with his usual and I left it too late to order). There was alot of poo.

Poo is meant to be firm. If it’s soft there’s an issue…

winteriscoming2022 · 20/01/2023 07:32

My 5 month Norfolk Terrier will have a poo two hours after eating plus one more!. She is fed twice a day Royal Canin puppy so has 2-3 poos a day. Her last meal is at around 5pm so usually goes at around 7pm, then again when she gets up at about 7am. She has her breakfast at around 8am then a poo at 10am. She's never needed to go in the night but would do so if I put her out iyswim
Oh and she will only have a wee or poo in our garden not while walking

TheShiningPup · 20/01/2023 07:46

When our lab was a pup she generally used to poop at the same frequency she was fed, with maybe occasionally an extra one so 4/5 times a day. At 7 months it was 3/4 times

Newpeep · 20/01/2023 11:23

5 month old pup has 3 poos a day. She is on Arden grange with some Forthglade in a Kong in the evenings.

Supermarket food is notorious for having a lot of bulking. It costs more in the long run as they need to eat more. Change it would be my recommendation (over 10 - 14 days)

Newpeep · 20/01/2023 11:23

That's on three meals a day

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 20/01/2023 12:04

is pup up to date on worming? Eating lots but not gaining weight would make me worry about worms.

BeansOnToast32 · 20/01/2023 13:19

My 6.5month old CKCS goes at 7:30am, 10am and between 7-8pm. She's fed twice a day because she stopped being interested in her lunch time meal.

I've got her on Canagan with a little of the Forthglade wet trays mixed in.

Going that frequently isn't normal so I'd definitely switch food as already suggested and maybe take a trip to the vets, my pup has never needed to poo that frequently even when tiny. I'd say she never had no more that 4 a day and never went in the night.
