Hi
We have a 9 month old Samoyed, she's gorgeous and such a great addition to our family
She does however chew things ... it's been very recent and hoping it's her teen years!
She has chewed my GHD plug today and many shoes, teddies and just stuff she gets hold of
We're putting things away but she's a master and we need to be ahead of her not behind ... any top tips
Thanks

When is she doing the chewing?

Highly suggest babygates to keep her out of areas where she can get to things she's likely to chew.

Solidarity. Nine month collie-mix pup chewed two computers today, having never shown any interest before 😭

Dog attack was not in our business continuity plan. 😭😭

More helpfully (maybe) I know she is chewing when bored and maybe a bit fed up waiting for me (I was on the last phone call before lunchtime walk when she chewed the computers...) - thus a new resolution not to push my luck with that.

She has got better at leaving some things alone (eg slippers) after a million repeats of just saying 'no' and removing without drama.

She loves a hard-going meaty treat chew (like a bull pizzle or similar) . I think we'd avoid house-chewing if I could give her more of those. But I restrict to max one a day, and not every day. I'm not completely sure why I restrict those, I must have read it somewhere. Anyone know if more would be OK?

9-12 months is such a hard age! For a big dog like yours, super long lasting chews are great. Our lab loves his buffalo ear, raw bones, hooves and his favourite (🤢) deer legs, anything else is gone in minutes! He can only have the flat teddies or he turns the house into a snow field 😂. He got one from Home Bargains for Christmas that has 20 squeekers in! I think there’s still a few he hasn’t popped but it has lost a leg.

I feel your pain, 11 mo alaskan malamute cross. Very hormonal and unsettled at the moment. I am struggling a lot, it's almost like he's looking at me thinking help me I have no idea what I want to do. Being a large breed is so much harder as he can hurt us by accident also. He probably weighs about 45 kilo already.

We have had advice from a trainer and she's given us an enrichment programme, it does work but sometimes life is not quite that straightforward to follow it as if I have meeting I need him to be calm and quiet.

Does she have a big variety of chews that she is allowed to have? If not, I would start there - make sure she has constant access to chews and kongs so she's not as tempted to look elsewhere.

Unfortunately - the main way to stop it is really just environmental management (so baby gates and putting stuff away) and also making sure she's getting enough exercise and mental stimulation too.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 19/01/2023 07:12

Yes baby gates so she can’t get to stuff but dogs really love chewing, so make sure she has stuff she can chew - really long lasting stuff like yakkers and buffalo horns are great. As are discussing body parts that don’t last as long but should still scratch the itch a bit - chicken feet, rabbit ears etc

My border collie was never interested in cables and preferred chewing on wooden table, chair legs, carpet etc. He stopped at about 10 months old.

Fourteen month old Labrador here. Started eating random dog poo at ten months. Work in progress getting the bugger to stop. I don't remember the teens being such a time with the previous three! Hope he'll grow out of it.
