Chemical Castration

Hello I have 2 young Golden Retrievers. Last week they both had the implant for chemical castration - basically I wanted to see if this would calm the older one down (he’s 2 and a half) as he can be really over sexual with the younger one who is 2. He is a working line GR whilst younger one is show line. They are super well behaved and we have no issues with either of them (apart from the excessive licking and humping). However GR1 has now started to be really needy and hyper - he won’t let me out of his sight and is constantly prowling and panting around. It’s like he doesn’t know what to do with himself! Has anyone had experience with chemical castration? Is this something they go through while their hormones are settling down? I will call the vet on Monday and ask but just wondered if anyone here could offer an insight. Many thanks

Apparently they get a testosterone surge post implant that can last up to 6 weeks…one of the reasons I keep putting it off!

After that it’s meant to be the same as normal castration though!

Thank you - there’s nothing online about effects but it does definitely seem like a surge of hormones is happening ! It’s not affecting my show line one though - he’s still a dopey donut 😂😂

If it’s suprelorin, the data sheet states:
After implantation, there is an initial increase in plasma testosterone, then, a rapid decrease to an undetectable level (below 0.4 ng/ml) within 9 to 20 days of implantation.

Fingers crossed its nearly over for you!! I was warned before hand it would be a rough couple of weeks!

We're a week in too. Ours is an 8mo springer and we got the implant at 8mo on vet advice. He told us it would take 2 weeks for things to settle down. Today he's behaving like he's having a hormone surge but no other issues. Hoping he's more normal tomorrow but I think it's expected for him to be worse some days.

On a positive note he's already stopped humping and peeing indoors, is listening to commands again and recall has improved. We were worried he'd get reactive or have fear issues but so far he's been more relaxed than he's ever been. I know it's early days though.

Apart from today lol, and even so only since 2pm.

We're trialing him with the implant before deciding on the op, just in case he gets too anxious without testosterone
