10 week puppy poorly after chicken

Cockapoo. He’s been on a Pets At Home wet food brand with some dry biscuits on top, absolutely fine. He’s a big healthy wonderful puppy (strongest of the litter) and no isses or worries at all so far.

I worked yesterday and DH had the day off. Around pup’s lunchtime DH noticed we were out of wet food so ripped up some M and S cooked chicken slices and fed them to the puppy with some biscuits rather than just nipping out to get puppy food.

When I got home, my puppy wasn’t the same. Head shaking, scratching ears and sceeaming, suddenly being very clingy. He usually sleeps no problem in crate but did not settle last until he came on to my bed. This morning he is still scratching, and now he’s got scabs in his ear, and has been sick.

I know he needs to be checked, just waiting for vets to open at 9am to ring them. I’m convinced it’s the chicken but DH thinks I’m being ridiculous?

Do you know what flea treatment was used?

Advocate, why?

Vet was confident its not a reaction, temperature okay etc.

Some people use dodgy OTC stuff. Plus some dogs have a reaction to the actual flea stuff. If pup has been flea treated I wouldn’t expect to see live fleas.

It was done on the 27th. The vet check was filmed by the breeder, saw the whole thing.

Sorry. Wasn’t implying breeder had lied. I have a hound with chicken allergy. Also reacts to some meds. Hope you can clear it up.

Not all types of flea treatment work on all fleas, so that might be why the Advocate hasn't worked.

Wolfiefan · 11/01/2023 18:47

Never heard that before @whataboutsecondbreakfast could you possibly explain.

tocahairchop · 11/01/2023 18:54

@justgettingthroughtheday why do you say grain is not good for dogs? I've been told the opposite by a vet. If there's no known allergy to grains then they should have it for their heart health?

our spaniel can't have chicken like that. Weirdly he can have pet food type chicken but not cooked human chicken of any sort! Always turns his tummy. Solid poo is a good sign, he's probably on the mend already!

My dog, not a spaniel, is exactly the same.

Her dog food is a high quality wet food with chicken and she's absolutely fine on that but if she eat chicken from an actual chicken she gets a stomach upset.

It probably indicates that the amount of actual chicken in the dog food is pretty low, despite the hefty price.

Over the years that I've been on this forum this has cropped up from time to time and loads of posters have said the same, their dogs can't eat chicken.

I think the theory is that localised resistances develop towards whatever product the local vets are favouring at that time. So then the vets start to change to something else and a resistance eventualy develops towards that but those felas are vulnrbale again to the original treatment.

However, if you're after some light coffee time reading, an interesting article here debating that and giving other/additional possible reasons for treatment inefficiency: www.veterinarypracticenews.com/fleas-persist-but-reason-isnt-resistance/

Enjoy! Grin

Ignore the typos - stupid wireless keyboard!

Thanks @SirSniffsAlot - you saved me looking up the relevant articles Grin

It's a curse of mine: to always be able to remember some article I've read somewhere about something.

It's just a big relief whenever I can find it again! Smile
