Grain free, high protein training treats

CaraVann · 09/01/2023 19:59

We are in the process of working with a behaviourist for our 2 year old rescue dog.
He is highly anxious with associated behaviours. The behaviourist has recommended that we stick to high protein, grain free food which, luckily, we already have. We feed him the Crave dry kibble.
Obviously, we will need to do the same with his training treats. Crave do them but it will work out very expensive as we have a lot of work to do with him and I imagine we will be getting through quite a few treats.
Can anyone recommend any high protein treats which are reasonably priced (or even a recipe for home made ones?)

if you look at pâtés, JR do them, ancol do them, they come in a range of sizes and can be cut up really small. I can’t speak for all
brands but I know JR are suitable for raw fed dogs, so will fit the bill.

Branster · 09/01/2023 20:12

Could you not use the main food as treats and reduce the quantity accordingly at meal times?

CaraVann · 09/01/2023 20:36

Thanks Lastqueenofscotland2 I will take a look
Branster we’ve tried but he doesn’t seem very motivated with his usual kibble.

I make my own, easy and cheap.

You need a silicone mould Treat Silicone Mould 468 Cavity Round Silicone Mould Dog Cookie Molds Chocolate Drop Mold Silicone Sphere Mould amzn.eu/d/j0qwVCd Like this

I use:

1 egg
1.5 cups coconut or rice flour. Whatever works for you.
1/2 tin of wet dog food, or a tin of sardines, drained.

You can add peanut butter, whatever flavours work and are good for your dog.

Ours is fine with rice flour but not wheat, so we use that but coconut flour works great or there's cassava flour too.

Whizz it all up in food processor and spread the mix into the mould with a spatula, bake for 10 mins or so until golden and crisp.

Sprats (but they stink!)
Chopped up hot dog sausage
JR pâté cut up into tiny cubes

RedSpatula · 09/01/2023 21:11

I use either cooked chicken in little chunks, or pieces of cheese. I've heard others suggest Primula cheese spread in a tube, easy to carry and you can give them just a little smidge at a time

Hellocatshome · 09/01/2023 21:13

Chicken or cheese

MyGirlDaisy · 09/01/2023 21:19

Dried fish skins or sea jerky (you can cut them into smaller pieces) I use Zooplus or Fish4Dogs - just don’t leave them in your pocket like I did and wondered what the smell was in the supermarket queue!!
Also, as others have suggested, cubes of cheese, sausage, pate, primula all go down well.

beepbeepme · 09/01/2023 21:25

I used to use tiny bits of cheese or chicken.

This is such a good idea!

In the meantime I like the pate or the training treat from jr pets. I'm stingy and cut it into small cubes and freeze.

PurpleBirch · 09/01/2023 21:57

Millies wolf heart do good training treats in big tubs.

Wolfiefan · 09/01/2023 22:06

I have a dehydrator. I dry liver or lung or turkey etc.

GuyFawkesDay · 09/01/2023 22:52

Price wise I reckon I spend £1.50 worth of decent wet food, 1 egg and not much flour. And that amount does over 1 tray, so about 500 treats!

CaraVann · 10/01/2023 13:55

Thanks everyone, that’s brilliant.
GuyFawkesDay thanks, I will give those a go.
Do you give them frozen to your dog BigBundleOfFluff or defrost them first?
Wolfiefan I think my new air fryer has a dehydrator too so I’ll try that.

The homemade ones with wet dog food might not be high value enough for your pup. My dog is happy with them in the house but wouldn't be interested out and about.

Liver cake is a big hit though

CMOTDibbler · 10/01/2023 15:02

I use a pick and mix bag of treats so that they get a variety with some bigger jackpot bits or more preferred. Dried sprats break down nicely to tiny bits, and I get smoked fish skin treats, dried duck pieces, and other pure meat things. For some pups I use dog pate in a tube so you can squeeze a tiny bit out at a time, but I don't find it very convenient

GuyFawkesDay · 10/01/2023 16:16

My dog goes made for them, especially if they're made with a tin of sardines and some sprays chucked in. Loves a good fishy treat! They're reasonably low calorie too, so that helps

BigBundleOfFluff · 10/01/2023 18:18

@GuyFawkesDay - I've ordered the mould from Amazon - it will arrive tonight and I have sardines and sprats. I'm quite excited, I love baking.

@CaraVann - I chop up the biggest one as most economical and freeze in lots of bags. Take one out when required they defrost in a few mins. Its marketed as a complete food but I'm not convinced by that claim.

Claudia84 · 10/01/2023 20:50

You can also use a different 'flavour' kibble to what they normally have so that you can use with a little more abandon. Something like the scrumbles salmon flavour might work?
