Tail amputation

My dog injured his tail, it bled, he bit it, damaged it...long story short vet had to amputate, this was September, it healed fine & vet happy but he's been very growly since ?? (Dachshund cross)

Growly in what way?

Is it linked to you touching the amputation site, or is it because they're a bit nervous/anxious as a result of such a severe injury?

Just angry, is hard to describe- stump healed fine, fur grew back & likes his walks still on (& off lead running), eats fine, sits on our lap & if feeling snuggly will let you stroke near there...I'm wondering if he has a "phantom" tail - thinks it's still n there?? X

Any possibility of nerve damage or similar? Or just remembering the pain and trauma?

Tell your vet; thorough exam for pain including non-related spinal pain esp as it's a dachsie.

Maybe an amputation neuroma causing pain at the end of the stump?

He has one of those line sleeping bag beds so he has like an attached blankie snuggles under & doesn't growl at bedtime & this would be touching him x

He's long like a dachshund but longer legs & shorter ears, I think it's psychological?? X
