Advice for helping elderly dog

strawberriesarenot · 05/01/2023 17:07

My neighbour is struggling to get his elderly collie in and out of his small car. The dog travels on the back seat, clipped in with a harness.
Poor dog has arthritis. Won't use a ramp. Too heavy for neighbour to lift (neighbour also has arthritis.)
This is a very loved and looked after dog, and will be bought anything (within reason) that will help.
I wondered if anyone had tried any sort of simple to use hoist that they would recommend.
Thank you

Worth looking at Canine Arthritis.

I dont know of any hoists that take all the weight.

There are some on Cam that help spread the weight of the dog between the dog and owner.

Some dogs prefer low steps to a ramp and if the owners could support some of the weight with a harness that would help loads.

I guess it depends on what the owner is able to do.

Re ramps it may be worth carrying on with trying.

Start with the ramp lying flat on the ground and just put treats on it. The dog may start to walk alongside the ramp just to eat the treats but as they get used to it you can the encourage the dog onto the ramp with treats.
Over time you can gradually raise the ramp start with just being on a brick etc

I wasted money on a step but my 14 years old collie wasn't interested. Luckily as the weather was quite chilly and he was wearing his Danish style coat, I realised that the very broad girth strap and the broad between the front legs panel made an excellent hoist. It only took a couple of tries before he was putting his front paws on the back of my estate car and I'm now hoisting him in easily. Can also grab the strap to glide him down to earth again.
He's quite heavy, I can't lift him without the aid of the jacket as I'm rather old...
The coat is easy to put on and off should he need it removing for the walk.

Thank you both, especially for the coat suggestion. (Don't think the ramp will ever work- it's too clumsy for both dog and owner to manage.) I found a back leg sheepskin hoist sling when I was looking at the coat. I wonder if that would be enough.

Anything that takes the weight off the back legs (old dogs frequently have very weak back legs while the front legs remain usable) though I would avoid a long "lifting" strap as that could be awkward if you only need it for getting in and out of the car. My dog's coat also comes in handy to help him over obstacles like logs etc.
I'm sure you'll find something to suit.

Inner Wolf sell aluminium steps that fold to the size of a briefcase. Saw someone using them in a car park and was very impressed.

I cant recommend CAM as mentioned above. Look at their harnesses designed to help lift rear end or front end depending on what the dog is doing. Best harnesses ever for dogs needing help with mobility.

We have just been looking, and have ordered one. Thanks so much for advice.
