My Sil has one and I have fallen in love with her. I would never have thought of one before.

DH and I are seriously thinking about getting a couple later in the year.

I've had two standards, which barked rather than yapped.

I'm a massive fan. They have tonnes of personality and love a really long walk. Happy to be left alone.

You MUST protect their backs. Stairs are a no no wherever possible; which is why I cannot have one now.

You MUST carry them properly, i cannot believe the number of people I see that carry them like a clutch bag. When we got our first puppy the breeder showed us the correct way to lift and carry. My mother went nuts if we didn't do it right.

They are very stubborn. That look on the one with your BIL is the one you will see often.

Just don’t do it, they are unhealthy dogs of which up to 24% get IVDD.

“A sometimes crippling disease, IVDD affects 19 to 24 percent of Dachshunds,1-2 more than any other breed. The disease occurs when the intervertebral disks, the shock absorbers between the vertebrae of the spinal column, bulge or burst, becoming herniated. Pressing on the nerves in the spinal cord, these disks can cause pain, nerve damage, loss of bladder and bowel control, and paralysis”.

“Disability associated with intervertebral disk herniation (IVDH) may include an inability to walk or control bowel and bladder function, along with secondary conditions such as pressure ulcers from remaining in a recumbent position and recurrent urinary tract infections from incomplete emptying of the bladder. If a wheelchair is needed, it must be custom-fitted to the individual dog to ensure the most comfort and utility of the cart”.

Seeing them try and run and keep up with similar sized dogs is so sad. That disease sounds so incredibly painful.

If you read what the above poster has written you must see how dreadful it is.

“You MUST carry them properly”
”You MUST protect their backs. Stairs are a no no wherever possible”

The poor dogs are that badly formed they can’t even manage the stairs, they are essentially disabled.

My tiny 12 week old puppy can manage stairs (when he sneaks up them we don’t let him normally).

If you buy a Dachshund knowing all the above you really can’t call yourself a dog lover. I know some people don’t know beforehand.

If your after a stubborn dog get yourself a terrier, they are fun little dogs, lots of breeds to choose from and generally they are pretty hardy and long-lived.

I saw three on the beach this past weekend, all had little wheels for back legs 😢 they were running around quite happily.

I have a miniature daschund she is 3. She was stubborn with toilet training.
Loves to bark at anyone going past the window. But wouldn't change her for the world. She is a fiesty wee character who has gave our family plenty of laughs and love in the 3 years. And she has a big sister who's a lurcher and they get on great. But she defo is the boss. Gets one long walk a day in the country park and a short one at night and she enjoys them.
