hi all

I am still pondering breeds and are now down the last two
lab and cocker

I am going for the show cocker rather than working due to the needs of the wcs being much higher than the show

the only show I have known had the personality of a tea towel

so please tell me about your show cockers , pictures too if possible

I read this as Slow Cookers and came on to see what on earth you meant!!

Same 🤣

@Lastqueenofscotland2 Clumbers are beautiful, don’t see enough of them around 👍

Lynca · 04/01/2023 12:35

Show cockers always seem to get a bad rap on here. Maybe I'm just lucky but I have two and they are the most wonderful, loving, silly, affectionate dogs ever! No resource guarding issues whatsoever and they are excellent with my kids.

They can be quite clingy and when they want to cuddle (which is often) they will bury their face in my neck as if they are trying to become one!

Energy wise they are happy with half an hour in the morning and 45 minutes in the afternoon, however at the weekend I take them for longer walks and they will go for as long as I can offer.

I also have cats, rabbits and chickens and have had the lot of them roaming in the garden alongside the dogs with no issues.

I would absolutely recommend the breed.

I don't understand. You don't like terriers? What?

Reindear · 04/01/2023 12:39

Go for a lab. Such lovely good natured and loyal dogs

OrlandointheWilderness · 04/01/2023 12:40

I have working bred spaniels and I would recommend one over a show any day. They actually aren't that demanding- they need mental stimulation probably more than hours of physical exercise. Doing something like gundog training/agility/Canicross or obedience will keep them happy and as long as they have an outlet they are lovely. Mine are exceptionally trainable, biddable and will settle happily. I have a springer (the needier and more difficult of the two) and a sprocker (lovely dog, bit more independent but still lovely to work).

OrlandointheWilderness · 04/01/2023 12:41

Oh and absolutely no resource guarding. They wouldn't be allowed!
A lab could be a nice choice, but you've got the same dilemma. I'd always go for working lines personally.

Some people don't!

NewYearNewSeeds · 04/01/2023 12:42

I'll speak up for show cockers.

I've known about half a dozen and all have been lovely and very safe around kids.

They have had varying degrees of personality from one who behaved like a super model: all aloof and graceful and proud. Right up to one who behaved like a naughty boy scout: all climbing rock faces and getting his nose into anything and everything. He was hilariously funny and used to get taken on all sorts of holidays and took it all in his stride and with enthusiasm. There was one who was like the over keen but clumsy kid, always wanting to please everyone and always happy to see you (like Neville Longbottom!). There was one who just loved cuddles from anyone and brought them his ear as an offering (carried it in his mouth like a slipper). There was one was wicked good at learning tricks and once she knew one, she would do it over and over again to make people laugh.

Half Labrador half Cocker spaniel!!

Thanks for clarifying, was confused also about the half cocker, half spaniel!

Your dog is a beauty.

Flaunch · 04/01/2023 12:44

What is it you don’t like about Terriers? If you want a dog with personality and opinions but reasonable small and easy to train I can’t see why you’d rule out the largest group of those while choose to consider a dog you’ve openly said you don’t like 🫤

Toomanysleepycats · 04/01/2023 12:52

My friend got a golden retriever puppy from a good breeder when it was confirmed she and her husband could work from home on a permanent basis.

When they went to view the puppies a couple of times before, they chose the one who seemed most chilled. This was because they knew working from home a hyperactive young dog wouldn’t work. I believe the breeder also was part of the choosing decision and thought this particular puppy would suit their lifestyle best.

It has been a wonderful success. I think his chill is just laziness myself.

Im put off spaniels with their hyperactivity.

I wouldn’t rule out a working cocker - this is currently my 5 month old after his walk.

He does have his moments of being a bit of a tit but generally speaking when he’s at home he’s chilled as long as he has his toys or a chew to keep him busy.

He’s soft with the kids, loves nothing more than a cuddle, sleeps through the night, toilet trained within 2 weeks and doesn’t mind being left alone for a few hours.

A cocker is a spaniel though or did you not mean spaniel?

Looks half lab to me. Gorgeous.

How many breeds have you explored OP? Or just ones you have contact with?

IcakethereforeIam · 04/01/2023 13:16

I'm disappointed no-one has posted a picture of a slow cooker.

The dog pics are lovely.

I was asked to watch a friend's cocker spaniel for a few hours one evening. He was a lovely dog, still quite young, but he did not stop all the time he was with me. And the poor dog crapped, massively, all over my kitchen floor. Which annoyed me, I'd been told he didn't need a walk or I'd have taken him for one. I think they rehomed him, he was obviously more work than they wanted.

Twinklenoseblows · 04/01/2023 13:19

I'd say try for a withdrawn guide dog instead. They rehome to people with cats and you'll be getting a known quantity.

Whattheladybird · 04/01/2023 13:24

My slow cooker’s personality is a bit temperamental but if you wiggle the lead it usually works… ah…

Anyway, came for the slow cooker leaving with this link: stabyhounuk.com

I came across one of this dogs over the Christmas period and it was beautiful, and reading that website about the character traits made me want one (but I can’t). But maybe, given what you’re looking for in a dog, it would suit you.

NalaNana · 04/01/2023 13:30

I've got a year old show cocker and she's an absolute delight. She is quite lazy in the house and will snooze a lot of the day away, but gets a bit whacky when she's out running on her walks!

I'd say she's got a funny little personality, definitely not that of a tea towel 😂

She's very affectionate and doesn't resource guard at all. She does have separation anxiety but I think a lot of that is down to the fact that my fiancé and I both work a lot from home.

She rips up her toys a lot but has never been prone to chewing furniture or anything like that.

I'd recommend one in a heartbeat! I can't upload a picture from the app but I'll try to log into the web based version.
