Small dog running next to bike

I have a King Charles, she is VERY active. I lead a very active lifestyle, we walk 3/4 time in the week extensively in the forest (around 2 hours) and I also take her with me on runs 3 times a week (45 min run) we have gradually built up to this level over the sat two years. Our usual ‘big’ walk is is a 40 min walk (just under 4K) - some days I have been taking my bike for this route, it’s all grass and she runs through the vineyard without a lead. I drive slow and of course she has no lead so can choose the pace, however, she runs ahead of me (as in, I’m never in front) she is free to run as slow as I cycle which is a fast walk for her at best. She does however seem to choose to run and i worry it’s too much for her? We stop regularly to greet other dogs and she doesn’t give me the impression that it’s too much but I worry for the long term impacts and because I don’t usually see other people biking with a small dog. Should I do this? I only do it because on the days I don’t run, I notice that our usual 40 min walk + the 25 min mini route is not enough and she still has loads of energy .. any advice ?

@ShouldIknowthisalready

I don't think anyone apart from you has said anything about a 40 minute walk being too long, though? Unless I've missed a post somewhere.

People are saying that adding in a 40 minute intense run alongside a bike is a lot for a lap breed like a cavalier, especially on top of all the other exercise she's getting.

It could also explain why the dog is often a bit energetic - as sometimes too much exercise can lead them to be physically fit but not mentally tired.

Our usual ‘big’ walk is is a 40 min walk (just under 4K).......

@ShouldIknowthisalready I took that to mean the main walk of the day is 40 minutes, not that 40 minutes is a particularly long walk.

Angrymum202 · 04/01/2023 12:55

@whataboutsecondbreakfast that is what I meant, thank you :)

as for mental stimulation, like I said we do a lot of trick training, I’d say we were pretty advanced in terms of the range of tricks she can do. I’m really not trying to blow my own trumpet as I believe I have fully lucked out here and this is way more about her character rather than my training abilities.

She’s is very skilled and obedient, we do a fair bit of scent training, we started with the game of ‘finding’ hidden treats, then moved on to favourite toys (reward with treat when located) and are now at a point where I can give her a familiar item to smell (lead, collar, dog brush - something that isn’t a high value reward) and she will find it when hidden and asked to ‘find’. I don’t want to encourage hunting as there is a lot of wildlife in my area and I have worked hard to ensure she doesn’t do this. Although she would love to chase birds and squirrels if allowed.

She’s so clever and loves all kinds of training. She can do a range of tricks from bow, to beg, to staying in sit from afar and being released by command. She is also very good at agility too! She is super obedient which is why the free running on my jogs/cycles works, she has an excellent recall and is just generally very committed to listening to me.

I try to incorporate mental training everyday in her routine somehow, whether on walks (off lead heal, recall with and without distractions etc) but we only manage really structured sessions in the garden/ house 3/ max 4 times a week for a good 20 to 30 mins, she is also groomed, brushed and just generally loved and cuddled daily which she absolutely loves ❤️

I know I could do more but I do also have three children and work from
home. In addition to this, a good friend’s daughter (19 years old) also comes a few times a week to spend time with her and they do some of this training together in preparation for her first show this year! :) I’ll be going back to work in the office soon, so I won’t be able to get out to the forest during the week anymore. I have a dog walker arranged for then but I worry about her not getting the exercise she needs to be happy.

At present, she gives me the impression she is a happy dog, but I just find she needs a certain level of physical activity before she can really relax and be the lap dog she was bred to be 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just find it genuinely hard to know what’s too much, especially as the advice of my vet was pretty vague.

OP there is nothing wrong with dog running along by bike in fact Bikejoring is a growing sport like Canicross.
You get dogs of all sizes competing.

As I said rest is important, just make sure she is get 2 days a week rest and she will be fine. I think the level you are doing is fine as long as she gets rest days like any athlete needs.

PaperBagsAreUselessInRain · 04/01/2023 18:57

I would just change one of the days for a quieter day (probably one of the ones with the long forest walk) so she gets a rest day.

We have to enforce a quiet day on our WCS otherwise he would just keep going like a train.

Rest doesn't necessarily mean a really short walk.

You can still go out for an hour, but just make it a walk focused on mental stimulation and enrichment, not getting her to run all the time.

Dogs need time to sniff and explore their surroundings - they can't do that if they're running beside you at your pace.

This. And do you take water out for her? The amount of people running or cycling with their dog who are not carrying a backpack or anything that could be containing water - even in the middle of summer round here, really pisses me off. There are no mountain streams or natural water sources where I live but tons of dogs (near a beach). She sounds a gem by the way.

Thanks for all the advice! I will take heed re the rest days and I’ll also switch things up with the joint runs together and leave her at home and do a slower walk on those days instead🥲 she’s going to be so sad when I leave in my running gear without her, but if it will help keep her healthy then of course I’m going to do it ! I don’t really want to not take her on our Forest walks as she absolutely loves that and the pace is generally quite relaxed 😻

@marmaladepop yes I always take water and a little foldable bowl with me and lots of yummy treats to keep her motivated :) and yes she is an absolute gem and so so good with children! I really did luck out with her.

@Mrstumbletap and yes you’re right, I rudely forgot a pic of the star of the show! One attached for you 😻

The King Charles and the Staffordshire bull terrier are the only two dogs the KC say have totally reliability with children.

You do not get a better breed than those two with kids x
