Hi, as the title says.
I have 2 golden Retrievers. I would love an Irish Red Setter. However I have heard some negative things about the breed regarding difficulties with training and issues with hyperactivity. Can any one advise??

Get a collie. Ps red setters are similar but don’t know when to obey. Like don’t run into that road

Compared to GR, I would say much less hairy, can bath him very quickly, not as doggy-smelly as the GR or lab or other water-retrievers.
Lighter, 29 kg vs 35, could lift him if I had to.
Otherwise v similar.
The other breed I'd look at is a flatcoat. Glorious dogs.

@villainousbroodmare honestly my posties had 2 wonderful, calm, obedient RS. A sight to behold helped my 3 year old get over her fear of dogs.

The 3rd one nearly broke them 🙈

I grew up with a red setter - she was gorgeous! Beautiful coat, very affectionate to some people - but omg! all over the shop, couldn't be calmed, very wary of some people and had a slight nasty streak with a few (no rhyme or reason as to why). I think she was very hard to train for my parents.

Lovely, lovely dogs. Completely mad.

Most beautiful goof-ball in the world 🥰.
Intelligent and affectionate. Gets on extremely well with the cats and only occasionally forgets her manners and nibbles their tails.
Loves to be as close as possible when inside the house, sits right up close to you and leans into you when standing, follows me about the house like a shadow. However once outside she turns into the most aloof and independent dog I have ever known, and likes to keep a couple of fields distance at all times. Due to this she is a 'long line' dog and also wears a tracker at all times 😁
The hardest dog to train I have ever had. No interest in food or toys which makes it tricky. Although she does enjoy sitting up to the table on a chair and insists on a slice of toast for breakfast every morning.
Love her to pieces. But not for the faint hearted!

Best breed of dog EVER . I have had them since childhood. They are so sweet and loving and have gentle souls . I may be biased as we show them and breed occasionally but I can’t think of a better breed for families !!! We have had other breeds alongside the reds but at the end of the day they hold my heart . With consistent kind training they are very biddable and extremely loving . Only off lead can they be a bit naughty and not come back !!!! So it’s very important to train them young .

Saw this and thought of this recent thread:

(Had one as a child, beautiful but quite quite mad)
