Anyone taken dog to vet for nail clipping?

So have my almost 2 year old lab booked into groomers in a couple of weeks where I’m hoping they can trim her nails. Trouble is she’s never been to the groomers and if I try to clip her nails she goes ballistic. My otherwise soppy lab turns into a hell beast. So needless to say we don’t try. But I think it’s desperate now. The middle two on each front paw are really long.

If groomers can’t do it is my only alternative is a vets trip? Will they have to knock her out? Anyone had this done before? How much was it? Thanks

My dig won’t let me clip his nails so I take him to local groomers who put him on their table and clip his collar. One holds him whilst they clip the back paws. They did some front ones, but they put a muzzle on him to do the last ones, all very quick, if you get someone who knows what they are doing, they are really good. We have an expensive pet shop near us with a groomers inside who do walk in nail trim, it’s £18 but well worth it.

Our dog hates having her nails trimmed but loves food more so either gets fed biscuits throughout the procedure or (and this might not be possible depending on weight) she is picked up and nails are trimmed whilst her legs are dangling. No idea why that works but she doesn't (can't?) get worked up in that position. She is around 28kg so the groomer needs to work fast!

Find a really good groomers with a harness. One your dog is lifted up on the table it is much easier.

I tried a couple of groomers (without the harness) and ended up at the vets who were going to put him out.

In the end I met a dog groomer who said she could do it and it was like magic!

Work on trust first, we should all be touching our dogs from puppies- everywhere. Get them used to paw touching, ear massage, legs. Makes it so much easier when they get older.

A vet will likely charge you a consultation fee, a good groomer should be able to do it. If you take them to a vet and they’ll associate a vet with pain and that could cause problems.

Pavement walking and exercise should be enough, if it’s a young dog. Mine didn’t get a nail trim until he was ten and mobility changed. If you mostly walk on grass, so the nails aren’t getting worn I’d try a file just get him used to the file with treats even if you aren’t actually trimming the nail. Build up over time.

Sympathies op. My sweet, nervous, 15 kilo Spaniel turns into Tyson Fury when I try to cut his nails. It's not just the bites I have to avoid, it's the kicks, scratches, headbutts, and he wriggles so much I'm scared he's going to break in half! Ex dp was really good at holding him in the air with his head buried in dps neck while I quickly did the nails. That might be harder with a lab though!

It used to take 3 people to hold my whippet down so the vet could clip his nails. I started using the grinder that some people have already mentioned on here and we’ve never looked back. I introduced it really slowly, with a lot of treats, over a couple of weeks, and now he has the best nails! Been using it for years now. Under a tenner on Amazon.

My pup had his first nail clip with a vet nurse ( part of their puppy package thing) he was so busy licking up the liver paste smeared on the table he genuinely didn't even notice! He absolutely adores going to the vets! Liver paste is the way forward OP!

I would try the dog groomer, my terrier doesn't like me touching his nails or paws but he is perfectly fine with the dog groomer, I guess because they know what to do whereas I don't ;-) He tore one of his claws last year but the dog groomer sorted it out and he was fine, I held his head and she did her thing! Good luck
