I've wanted a dog for 30 years, no joke.

We think 2023 might be the year for us! We have discussed breeds at length and think we have agreed one. I've found 2 KC assured breeders which aren't a million miles from me and contacted them asking if they plan on breeding this year.

What do I need to ask them? I can't believe this might be happening!

Ask to see KC paperwork before agreeing to a puppy, ask to see health test results, go to see the mum and ask if you can visit the pup before you bring it home. If they are a licensed breeder (more than 2 litters per year) check that they have council licence. Most importantly are they happy to answer all questions openly and do you get a good gut feeling. I would ask if they do any what's app groups for owners of their pups as this is a good indication of genuine breeders, they care about the puppies once they have left Mum.
Be prepared for a good breeder to vet you as a potential owner ie what training will you do, whether your lifestyle suits the breed and whether you have a secure garden etc.
Be very honest with yourselves about which breed would best suit you, any working breeds generally need a job to do otherwise they ca get bored and destructive etc. If you aren't already active and outdoorsy then definitely don't get a working breed. Also factor in the time and costs of training, not just a basic 6 week puppy course but potentially training above and beyond that.
