A really boring thread about vacuum cleaners

If, like me, you have a dog that sheds a lot, what sort of vacuum do you have and would you recommend it?

Mine is a Sebo.
It is shite.
It has been made all the more shite because DH did his annual turn on the vacuum cleaner and failed to tell me we were out of bags.

7 house guests, Christmas, mud and half a German Shepherd over my floors and no bloody vacuum. Nowhere stocks the bags, it's an Amazon job.

AIBU to go to Argos now and buy a new vacuum (only half joking)?

We 'treated' ourselves to this Miele vacuum cleaner last year and it's pretty good. It has a turbo thingy that's brilliant at removing dog hair from rugs and stairs. We went for bagless as ddog is a prolific shedder and would spend even more £££ on bags!

It's a bit of a beast so also ended up purchasing a cordless cleaner for a quick wizz around.

Stellaris22 · 28/12/2022 13:22

We have a Miele Cat and Dog with our basset who sheds constantly. It's done quite well but I hear good things about Shark pet lift aways too.

NantsIngonyamaBagithiBaba · 28/12/2022 14:41

Another vote for miele cat and dog

QuicheQuoche · 28/12/2022 14:52

I have the Sebo Felix Pet and love it! John Lewis sell Sebo bags if there’s one near you.
I also have a Eufy which picks up a crazy amount of dust and dog hair.

OatFox · 28/12/2022 14:53

I have the Shark lift away upright corded model and it's a dream for pet hair. You do have to cut some hair out of the roller and change the filters every now and then but it's worth it for the suction.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 28/12/2022 14:59

The Shark cordless with the anti hair wrap are an absolute pile of shite. Every time you use it, something gets blocked in it or needs taking to bits or cleaning. Thankfully just replaced mine with a Dyson again. Never again. However I have heard the corded ones are better.

Leonberger · 28/12/2022 15:24

We have a GSD and 2 leonberger with heavy undercoats.

The only one thats survived more than a few months is Henry. Twice a day he happily sucks up 3 dogs worth of fluff, mud and sticks plus toddler mess. Never clogs, no filters for hair to get stuck in and no annoying bar to wrap hair round.

Weve tried shark anti hair wrap, that was horrific and got binned quickly. The filters were too complicated and got blocked constantly then the motor burnt out. Dyson lived slightly longer but not much.

Another thing I can’t live without is one of those rubber brushes for sweeping the tumbleweeds from the wooden floors.

I think with dogs the simpler the design the better!

imaderrygirl · 28/12/2022 22:31

Excellent, thank you.
I was wondering about Henry - next door's cleaning lady shows up with a Henry every week and I presumed if you were doing it professionally, you'd need something reliable.
Also thought about going to Screwfix and buying an industrial model.

We have a second hand Miele that our neighbour kindly gave us (our Shark pet one blew up after just a year ..load of crap!) and it is amazing!
I have a double coated mega fluffy Eurasier and when she blows her coat it's like tumble weed .
The Miele can suck it like no over vaccum I've ever owned :) Even when it's felted into the carpet on the landing where she likes to sleep.

Oh and I second a rubber broom for the hard floors... brilliant!

RupertBearsScarf · 29/12/2022 00:00

We've got a Sebo, a Shark Liftaway (corded), had a Dyson Pet, a Panasonic and a GTech Ram. We didn't buy all these btw, some have been inherited!

The GTech was the worst, might as well have used a dustpan and brush. Second last is the Shark, which is by far the worst corded vacuum cleaner I've ever used. Then the Dyson, second best was the Panasonic and the absolute best is the Sebo. By a mile. I guess that isn't what you wanted to hear Grin

QuicheQuoche · 29/12/2022 07:53

I have a Henry as my upstairs vacuum. Can’t comment on dog hair as my dogs aren’t allowed upstairs but I find him a cumbersome twat.
He was given to me, would never have bought one. I frequently tell him I hate him 😄

Twonkyboo · 29/12/2022 07:57

I have had a meile cat and dog for 9 years. It is still going strong. Love it. My mum bought it for me because I had a Dyson I hated and she was always going on about how good the Meile was.

peanutbear · 29/12/2022 08:04

Just another vote for the Miele. Mine must be over 5 years old still going strong and bagless!!

ilovesushi · 29/12/2022 12:30

We have a miele. We got it about 10 years ago but it is still going strong. I think it was specifically one for houses with pets.

Can I ask is the Henry heavy? I have a lot of stairs and this puts me off but I do need something as my shark is also shite ( 2 golden retrievers) !

dumbstruckdumptruck · 29/12/2022 12:39

Am I the only one who came for the vacuum chat but stayed to find out about the 'half a German Shepherd'? 😂

Theoldwoman · 29/12/2022 12:47

Miele cat and dog here too. Best vacuum I have ever had.

custardbear · 29/12/2022 12:53

I'm watching this thread - we have a Samoyed (very floofy and blows coat twice a year) ... our Shark is a poxy hoover so need a new one quite urgently (before she blows!)

Quveas · 29/12/2022 12:56

I have to be honest - the "big brands" are all crap! Miele used to be fantastic until energy ratings enforcement came in - the newer models are, in my dogs opinion (long haired Border Collies). Shark and Dyson have been utter rubbish.

So... my go to's are (I have three - an upstairs, a dopwnstairs and a cordless - as I am disabled and struggle to cart vacuums around)

The big winner - downstairs, so dog hair, living, and MUDDDDY paws - a Bissel Smart Clean Pet version. Easily the best vaccum I have ever owned. The drawback? It may lift your carpets with the dog hair if you aren't careful!!! This one is incredibly powerful, but as a cylinder version I can manage it pretty well.

Upstairs - a Vax Airstretch Pet Max - powerful upright cleaner, and quite lightweight (under 5kgs). Good suction, easy to move around. Not quite as good as the Bissel, but a close second and very affordable (under £100). I replaced my Shark with this and it is easily fice times better than the Shark, which I bloody hated but kept until it blew up after paying so much for it. The Shark simply wasn't good enough to be a "downstairs" cleaner.

My cordless run around - the AEG cordless animal. This is small, very lightweight but utterly amazing pickup for a cordless. Shifts all the dog hair etc without any effort, easy to move and steer. Not the cheapest, but fantastic performance, rugged and robust, with good battery life from a single charge.

BigBundleOfFluff · 29/12/2022 13:02

Golden retriever and 3 long haired lass’s here. Miele! I actually have 2 as was worried the 10 year old one would give up and leave me stranded. (It hasn’t). The turbo brush removes hair that I didn’t realise was there.

Leonberger · 29/12/2022 13:04

@NoLongerATeacher I don’t find it heavy, although having the hose is annoying at times. Still worth it though!

I think I paid around £100 and it’s lived years, I think the shark lasted about 6 months at most.

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 29/12/2022 13:11

No dogs here but our Henry is about 35 years old. It has seen us through a major house renovation, all the mess that toddlers and children make, more house decorating and general everyday life.

The hose has been replaced but otherwise it seems to be indestructible.

ChiefPearlClutcher · 29/12/2022 13:29

I have had a sebo, miele, shark and a dyson with a shedding golden retriever. Roomba for the downstairs hard floor runs every morning.

Next i am buying a henry. Never spending money on a vacuum again.

Thank you - I think my solution is to perhaps have a Henry for upstairs ( mostly carpeted and dogs go everywhere) then a more portable option that I can use more than once a day downstairs. I too have the rubber brush which is a must have! Oh for a poodle eh? I’d never actually be without my boys whatever mess they make😂

Spanielsarepainless · 29/12/2022 17:12

I am on my third Miele Car and Dog. Wondering whether to try the cylinder Shark, but the Miele turbo brush is so brilliant.
