Taking dog abroad

Thinking of summer holiday in Europe (driving) and taking the dog. Has anyone done this and have tips? Or is it something you would advise against? I like the idea of a holiday somewhere different with the dog but a little worried about the heat (maybe Alps instead?) and trying to think of other issues to consider. We have a camper van (small VW) so easy transport and could happily camp but a holiday house would be nice.

We are currently in Western France with our dog and having a lovely time! It's not been too hot and on the days it's been above 28 or so we've just lazed around the pool or gone to a beach but made sure there's plenty of shade. He seems really happy and for us it was much better to take him than leave him in kennels etc. We got the ferry over from Portsmouth and had a pet friendly cabin so he could be with us the whole time.

Where in W France? How long did it take you to drive? Thanks

@Weflewinstyle we always drive and use the tunnel. Super quick and easy (well, it was pre Brexit. Not sure on rules now). Think some of the ferries now allow you to bring dogs up on deck with you but back then, they wanted you to leave dog in car which we weren’t willing to do. Husband happy to drive abroad but once I had a go, was confident sharing the driving. For Switzerland, you need to buy a vignette (little pass to stick on your windscreen) at the border. Not a problem, think it was about 20 Euros

after leaving the tunnel… where did you go and how much driving to get there?

I am a single parent. So wouldn’t want to get off ferry and have hours and hours of driving.

but would like warm and Sunny!

how long does the ferry take?

We're in the Arcachon bassin, v near Bordeaux. We drove from Caen to Tours (3 hour drive) spent a nice night there, and then headed from Tours to Arcachon which was about a 4 hour drive. Service stations are mostly dog friendly so there's plenty of options to stop along the way.

Lovely! In an air bnb? What’s the weather like? Good for tweens / early teens?

Yep a lovely Airbnb with it's own pool, but we've seen some great campsites too if that's more your thing. Kids are 12 and 10 and are broadly happy when they're not winding each other up 🤪. Weather is changeable, you can't rely on every day being sunny like you can on the Med, Weds was 24 and showery and yesterday was 30 and very sunny, but the rain doesn't seem to hang around all day like it does in the UK!

Definitely no camping

I don’t suppose you could share the listing please?
