Best vitamins/supplements for older dogs?

Hi all,

Our gorgeous dog is coming up to 11 y.o. and starting to get a bit stiffer and reluctant to jump.

Absolutely thriving generally so I'm thinking about some supplements for her.

I've seen YuMove PLUS recommended online but wondered what the wise MNers thought?

Grateful for any thoughts, thanks!

We tried tablets that had green lipped mussel in them a year or so ago but our dog is a bit sensitive and kept being sick on them. Might have been Yumove. We’ve just bought some Joint Aid which is more like a powder that you sprinkle on their food. She’s only 6 but sometimes a bit stiff so hoping that will help and will be easier to digest.

Youmove is brilliant for my 16 year poodle, he’s much more mobile now than before we started it.

Canine HA from riaflex with green lipped mussel is the best joint supplement in that it has the highest percentage of ingredients.

Yumove plus does have green lipped mussel in it to get high amounts of omega 3.

Joint aid does not have green lipped mussel but uses hemp instead which is also a source of mega free but plant based (joint aid are changing their recipe at the moment so things may change)

Yumove plus is easy to get hold off so may be worth a try and if you do not notice any difference try Canine HA

Many thanks all for the advice! x

Yumove plus is only sold directly from yumove, but i can definitely recommend.

I tried YouMove for our GSD but it didn't do anything. We now give her Vet's Kitchen Glucosamine...it's in liquid form and chicken gravy flavoured. You could see the difference within a couple of days, and has an amazing effect. I know a few others who I recommended it to have had great results too.

My nine year old dog was getting reluctant to jump in the car. He's now on Norton's Joint Aid and much livelier. YuMove is relatively expensive; it's worth comparing levels of active ingredients, which is why he is on this one, as it works out so much cheaper than YuMove.

Yumove plus, is miles better than yumove.

Spanielsarepainless, yumove plus 40% off regularly if you buy direct.

My old lad was on Riaflex Joint Plus and Green Lipped Mussel, plus a generic omega oil and turmeric for dogs - alongside regular veterinary care and medication.

Any sign of slowing up, reluctance to jump, etc should trigger a vet appointment. Supplements can only go so far and once they are already in pain they most likely need some sort of veterinary pain relief (eg Rimadyl) as well. A lot of people think that dogs just slow down as they get older and accept that that’s just how things are, but there are so many options for care/management of older dogs these days to keep them pain free and happy through their older years.

Also, have a look at the Canine Arthritis Management website and Facebook page. They are loaded with advice and proper researched/peer-reviewed information and was an absolute lifeline for us with our boy.

Jointsure has been as good as Yumove for my older dog. I have started the younger one on those too.

Bone broth from Karnlea has made a huge difference to him. Very highly recommend that.

Take note of any groaning or excessive licking of legs/paws, and see a vet if it occurs. Those were the first signs of arthritis in my boy.

Floralnomad · 22/12/2022 22:19

Ours has canine joint right on his breakfast and Yumove plus with his tea , he also has the Yumove digestive pills and I’m not sure he needs them but his bowels are excellent so I don’t want to tempt fate by stopping . He’s 12 and very active but does have bilateral luxating patella’s ( has had since about 2 ) so we’ve always given him supplements .

our beautiful 13 year old girl passed suddenly on Saturday. YuMove delivered her subscription on the Monday which will now go unused. Happy to send on to you if you’d like to try.

Our vet suggested 'Youmove joint care' for our dog - ex-racing greyhound turning 12 next March. The vet also recommended buying it on-line, rather than getting it from them, as it would cost less. Don't know how much it's helped (difficult to tell), but he's still enjoying his walks. Hasn't helped with the fact that he's an idiot, but that's always been the case.

itsnotmeitsu · 22/12/2022 23:42

@countdowntonap > Thoughts with you - it will get better but it'll take a while. As she was 13 it sounds like she was lucky to have you and live to a ripe old age.

Oh @countdowntonap, I'm so SO sorry for your loss. Hope you are coping ok? As @itsnotmeitsu says, she was lucky to have you. I will DM you, thank you so much for the kind offer.

Thank you all for the great advice, much appreciated.

We started looking into supplements around the same age with our dog, mainly for stiffness too. What helped most was choosing a simple joint formula with ingredients like glucosamine, green-lipped mussel, omega oils, and antioxidants - those are commonly used to support cartilage, lubrication, and mobility in older dogs.
YuMove is quite popular, but honestly many brands with similar ingredients can work. We’ve personally had good results with a gentle mobility chew from Pambros as well - the chew format made it much easier to give daily.

My two take Jointsure as it's abit cheaper then Yumove but basically the same.
Although the eldest also takes painkillers for her arthritis, Aktivait for cognitive function, a cardiac supplement for her heart disease and cinnamon for her diabetes!
It's all just to hopefully make life abit easier for her, she is 17 now and unlikely to be around much longer.
