Query about cocker poos and poodles

bluericicle · 10/12/2022 12:53

Just wondering why so many go for poodle crosses rather than a miniature poodle?

Growing up we had a different working breed, very intelligent but good pets. I always got the impression poodles were similar.

I know cocker poos were bred as hearing dogs originally.

Just wondering why people choose poodle crosses over a poodle?

I met a blind toy rescue poodle recently who'd been adopted near by. He is such a sweetie.

We have a miniature poodle. Brilliant breed.

Michaelmonstera · 10/12/2022 13:03

We had poodles when I was a child - I plan to get a toy poodle puppy when I retire in a couple of years.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/12/2022 13:05

Maybe some people don't want a dog cleverer than they are?Grin

Quisto · 10/12/2022 13:19

I had a miniature poodle for 17 years. They are fabulous dogs, go anywhere, do anything, walk for miles and appreciate a good haircut. In contrast, the Cocker poos I've seen locally don't begin to come close. @ErrolTheDragon absolutely 😂

UrsulaPandress · 10/12/2022 13:21

Always been a Spaniel girl but I am very tempted by a Parti Poodle.

mintbiscuit · 10/12/2022 13:23

People go with looks and accessibility (and possibly price)

I would go for poodle over cross breed every time. However, expect a long wait for well bred as supply is low in comparison to crosses.

Labradoodles and cocker pops and the like were mongrels when I was growing up. It’s a posh name put to a mixed breed dog to get idiots to part with more money than they are actually worth. They will keep doing it until the fad wears off, a fool and his money is easily parted!

TheVanguardSix · 10/12/2022 13:45

I don’t know any poodles, apart from one who is an absolute sweetheart. I must admit, I have met a million cockapoos (lockdown breed of choice, it seems) and I find them extremely nervous, clingy, high maintenance, just alway ‘on’. They’d drive me nuts. They give their owners no space.

mostlydrinkstea · 10/12/2022 14:14

@UrsulaPandress I really fancy a party poodle as well. A standard would be nice but realistically too big. I grew up with huskies (that makes me sound feral!) so a clever dog that doesn't shed is very appealing.

mostlydrinkstea · 10/12/2022 14:15

Wretched auto carrot. Parti. Two coloured.

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/12/2022 14:19

Mil had a miniature poodle , she was a wonderful pet. I am a huge fan and like the pps cannot understand why given the choice so many choose cocker poos .

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 10/12/2022 14:23

I grew up with cocker spaniels and love them. If I could get a dog now it would probably be a poodle. I've known several and they were all wonderful dogs. DCats would not approve of adding one to the family though.

thelobsterquadrille · 10/12/2022 16:33

I genuinely think a lot of people are put off with the "show cut" of a poodle. They're still seen as silly frou-frou dogs and not an intelligent working breed.

UrsulaPandress · 10/12/2022 16:38

I was genuinely blown away when I saw my first parti poodle.

I’ve got a cockapoo and the only idiot here is you with that post.

OP - why does anyone get any breed over another, Temperament, look, breeder, size, knowledge of the breed, etc etc etc.

I agree with this. Often when people looking for a cockerpoo describe what they want in a dog they are describing a poodle and none of the spaniel traits you’d end up with

Idbetternamechange · 10/12/2022 20:06

Poodles are great. Never met a poodle that wasn’t a good dog. They come in all sizes too. Really don’t know why people faff around with the various oodles.

Idbetternamechange · 10/12/2022 20:08

And oh, if I ever get my own poodle, it will 100% have a proper poodle cut at least once in its lifetime.

Notanotherwindow · 10/12/2022 20:12

Poodles are hypoallergenic and don't shed as much as other breeds so you are less likely to have an allergic reaction to them.

This isn't always true of cross breeds though. When you match two parents, you have no guarantee of which traits will be passed on to the puppies.

Welshy26 · 10/12/2022 20:17

I have a Toy Poodle. He is 8 years old now. Had him since a puppy. He's sooo smart!

LaurieFairyCake · 10/12/2022 20:20

Poodles are the most intelligent of all dogs I think

Sharralanda · 10/12/2022 20:26

We have both. We were looking for a cocker spaniel and ended up with a cockapoo after we decided they were pretty much the same dog but cuter.
I can say I'd have 10 more poodles but would never get another cockapoo (or a cocker spaniel for that matter).

thelobsterquadrille · 10/12/2022 20:31

Cockapoos vary so much, that's the problem. I walk several and they're all completely different - in terms of looks, colouring and personality. Stand them all in a row and none of them look even remotely alike.

One is golden, very chilled, no anxiety and really well-behaved. He doesn't shed or smell. He has good recall, is great with other dogs and good with people too. Very tolerant as well. He's basically the ideal dog. I can see why people see dogs like him and want one - he's absolutely lovely.

The second is a similar size but black and grey. He's anxious, noisy and compulsively licks himself, his bedding and anyone who lets him lick them. His recall is iffy as he has a high prey drive.

The third is about half the size of the others, completely black and an absolute nervous wreck. She pees when she's scared, takes ages to warm up to people and is also noisy - she guard barks a lot and while she's happy to be left, she's very nervous around strangers or new dogs and in new situations.

The issue with cross breeding dogs and not to better the breed unfortunately. I heard from a trainer recently that the cocker spaniel breed as a whole has gone to the dogs..

When you cross breed you have no idea what kind of traits are going to be thrown up. It can happen in any breed but obviously the further back you can trace lines and look at inbreeding coefficients the more likely you will get pups that don't have temprament issues etc.

thelobsterquadrille · 10/12/2022 20:49

Exactly @Fudgeylicious - but then you see posts from people saying "My cockapoo is amazing so you should get a cockapoo" 😬
