Adopting feral dogs

My BiL lives in another country, were feral dogs are part of the urban landscape.

Last year they rescued a full grown "puppy" from the park and their jolly tales of house wreaking, dog mauling, escapes, along with chat about coming back home has set my teeth on edge. It's obvious BiL thinks he can just let the dog go back to the park.

This morning we've been told they are rescuing their dog's "aunty" because he is very fond of her . She is to be darted, taken to a vet, fleaed , wormed. inoculated, and will wake up in her own crate next to her "nephew" in their one bedroom 3rd story flat.

Now I know what I think will happen , I've told him it's cruel, and if he want's to "save a soul" there are other better ways.

Am I just being a Western wuss?

What could possibly go wrong?
why are you so negative?
😁😁

It's insanity.

Most feral dogs will never cope with living as pets. I don't understand why you'd even want them to. They're not pets.

woopdedoodle · 05/12/2022 13:49

What could go wrong?

I'm assuming sarcasm alert.

Seriously I think both dogs will try and fight out dominance, great mates in the park is different to lets share resources.

I agree, OP. There is too blinked a view that being feral is automatically bad and being a pet is automatically an upgrade.

In many places a feral life is a dangerous life (as in, it comes with a higher risk of
accidents etc) but it's not necessarily a worse life for a dog. In fact, I'd argue that they have some benefits that pets do not have that make aspects of their lives more fulfilling or healthier than a pet life.

Plus, as far as dogs are concerned pets are very much the minority. About 80% of the world's dogs live in a feral or semi feral state in which they are unconfined to a single household, person, property or location.

I mean, from the sounds of it there’d be better ways for them to help than randomly adopting dogs and yeah street dogs make for challenging pets.

But they do tend to be pretty good with other dogs.

woopdedoodle · 05/12/2022 14:06

"But they do tend to be pretty good with other dogs."

That is a relief, I might think BiL is an idiot, but I don't want him shreaded by dogs.

Up date,
they've got the dog, but they haven't a proper dog crate , just some sort of play pen with 5 foot walls . She jumped out and spent the night on top of a wardrobe, jumping down for food and water.
She's apparently "ferocious" and not as biddable as she appeared in the park.

They think it'll be two months before they will be able to get a leash on her.

They are all sleeping in the same room. I think given the description of the stacks that the dog scaled to get to safety suggest they've got more problems than I thought.

Of course it's cruel. The poor dog is probably terrified and wondering what the hell has happened to her.

Just hope that her fear doesn't lead to her attacking anyone. If she does BIL only has himself to blame.

She's feral, it's the only life she knows.

I imagine she'll make a bid for her freedom at the first opportunity.

thelobsterquadrille · 09/12/2022 19:24

Sorry, but your BIL is being really unfair here. It's cruel.

woopdedoodle · 09/12/2022 19:54

100% agree, and I've told him.

Your bil is a loon.. Hopefully he hasn't got dc...

woopdedoodle · 09/12/2022 20:03

No kids, retired couple. I think it's the wife's driving idea, apparently she was magnificent in the park hunting the dogs were abouts .

I agree loons.

thelobsterquadrille · 09/12/2022 20:08

They're not just loons - they're being cruel and putting themselves in an incredibly dangerous situation.

I feel so sorry for that dog, it must be terrified and incredibly stressed.

pigsDOfly · 09/12/2022 20:28

It's stupid self indulgence.

Poor dog.
