Having a panic

Hi all,

We've been waiting to get a dog for 10 years, done a tonne of research and we're prepared for our lives to change, and are finally in a position to do so. We picked up 9-week-old puppy on Saturday and I'm having a total 'WTF have we done' panic. She wants to play all the time but gets overtired quickly but won't settle. She's biting everything, obviously i redirect her but sometimes it's because she's clearly tired but won't calm down. We have puppy classes in January, and have contacted a trainer to give us some support but I'm really panicked we've done the wrong thing. Is this a normal feeling? Does it pass? She doesn't have her second injections for another 10 days, so not sure when we can start going out for walks

Pic on a rare quiet moment

What an absolute sweetheart! Congratulations.
It will pass OP and you will soon wonder where you ever were without your dog.

And please don't worry about the biting. We spent the first 7 months with our labrador with our arms shredded to pieces! Once he lost his baby teeth he just grew out of it.
Just don't make a big deal of it (or allow your kids to). Pup will soon learn that she won't get attention from biting. No loud noises, crying or shrieking, a firm NO will do.

I could've written the exact same post. We picked up our gorgeous, longed for 9 week old pup on Saturday. Me and the kids wanted him for years and gradually convinced DH. I've read everything and thought I was completely prepared. Spent time warning every family member about biting, settling, toilet training etc but the last two days I feel like crying wondering what I've done to my lovely, ordered life. Need to hear that it gets better soon. We are crate training and he's sleeping brilliantly at night (as long as I stay in camp bed next to him) but is do bitey and unsettled during the day and I can't imagine ever being able to stop him crying when I walk away and getting back in my own bedroom! Feel like I did with baby blues!

@newpupworries it makes me feel a little better to hear I'm not alone! I've been in tears (not in front of pup), just difficult to see how we'll get through this at the moment

God yeah, puppies are gits. Please take it one day at a time, you will look back on this with relief that it's over but with fondness that you have an awesome dog at the end of it.

Me too! I suppose no matter how prepared you think you are, until it's a reality you don't know how you'll actually feel. Let's hope we're both reporting back in a few(?) weeks to say things are settling down 🤞🏻

Oh I have found my people - I thought I knew what I was doing (grew up with a dog, used to horses and other pets) but I now have a 10 week old terrier pup and she is much crazier than I expected. So sorry no advice, just sympathy!

bailarbailar · 12/12/2022 13:21

We had a better night last night, although she only sleeps for max. 3 hours at a time. hoping the vet can tell me this week what day she's allowed out for walks. Have been taking her out in a hoodie for now but I'm totally exhausted. Just hoping it gets better soon. @kitkatkat crazy is the word!!

glad you had a better night, lack of sleep does make everything feel worse doesn’t it! I’m going to try doing some more training as she does seem to really like learning stuff - in fact I have a horrible feeling she might be cleverer than I am. So far I can only think of sit, come, touch and we are having a go at stay.

KangarooKenny · 12/12/2022 14:24

Absolutely normal, it will pass.

Hebditch · 04/10/2023 03:09

Echoing everything said above - puppies are little buggers so thank goodness they are cute 😂 You have to ride it out and keep doing what you’re doing - I remember feeling like I was going insane in the first few days after we brought Teddy home as he would cry if I left the room/went to the loo and he was hanging off everybody’s trousers legs at about 10/11 weeks. He’s adorable now and good as gold. If you are having puppy panic, it only shows that you care and want to raise a well behaved pup- which you will. It doesn’t last for ever. Promise!

Op we thought this, a year and a half in all is quite chill around here!

1.get plenty of chew toys and very durable teddies and hand them over to the pup every time they go to chew/bite mouth at people or things. Say ‘teddy’ or ‘toy’ or whatever you decide as you hand over and it honestly gets to the stage they’ll go take up the toy either when you tell them to or even just when they’re mouthy- have them around the house and outside so you/they can just grab for one.
2.The book Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy is AMAZING! It reminds you that they’re literally babies, their goal is to make you happy but they just don’t know how to do it.
3.Remember the calmer you are the calmer they’ll be
4.We were all there op!! I promise you this!!!
5.Btw the dog threads on here are a wealth of knowledge, there’s a lot there but people are amazing and very helpful
6.congrats on the new addition- they are honestly a friend for life
