Keeping puppy warm at night

Excitedannie · 30/11/2022 20:08

6 month old cocker in a crate inside but I don't have the heating on overnight. Just wondered how everyone in the UK keeps their puppy's warm? She has her bed in there and a couple of blankets

Ours is 19 months and honestly he starts off lying on our bed and ends up on the bathroom floor tiles 🤣. I would say of you have some blankets then your pup should be fine.

OldTinHat · 30/11/2022 20:44

My ddog used to start off in his bed and sneak under the duvet in the night. I'd wake in the morning to find his hairy face on the pillow next to me.

I miss him - especially now its cold, he used to keep me warm!

MabelMoo23 · 30/11/2022 22:53

Ours is absolutely fine. She’s a 11 month old miniature dachshund and keeps herself warm by sleeping under our duvet at the foot of the bed.

i swore blind she’d stay in her crate at night, and she did so well. But then it was really hot in July so we let her sleep upstairs . That was July.

it’s December tomorrow.. #fail

UrsulaPandress · 30/11/2022 22:55

I’m ma bed.

He’s my third hot water bottle.

My 7 month old pup is short/single coated and I have just started putting a fleece on him overnight, as he was waking at about 3/4.00 am after previously sleeping through.

He has a fabric crate next to my bed, with the wool/eco type vet bedding and a few blankets that he likes to did into a nest. I’ve bought him a snugglesafe microwaveable heat-pad as well, but don’t plan on using it until the temperature really drops.

My non-floofy Lurcher (I had another with a Deerhoundy coat) was the same, he always needed a fleece at night during the late autumn/winter. None of my other dogs have needed anything more than a comfortable bed and a blanket. A high sided bed can help to keep them snuggly, as it protects them from draughts.

thelobsterquadrille · 30/11/2022 23:02

In our bed under the duvet - he starts off as foot warmer but moves up through the night and I often wake up to find him sharing my pillow 🤣

He's been in our bed since day one and is never swap it.

TranquilBlue · 30/11/2022 23:05

Dig not did!

I should add that he sleeps with the crate door open and sneaks onto my bed, where I snuggle him up with blankets, at about 6.00 am till I have to get up.

champagneplanet · 30/11/2022 23:07

Our pup is 4 months old. I have her in a fluffy doughnut bed in a crate in the kitchen/diner. No heating on in the night but the bed is placed on some vet bed so not directly on the floor. She also has a fleece blanket that I put over her but i'm pretty sure that it comes off. She's been fine, she really snuggled into the sides of the doughnut bed. If she gets too hot there's space in the crate for her to move to.

GreenManalishi · 30/11/2022 23:15

Donut bed with a couple of the cheap fleece blankets and an equafleece goes on her when she ones in from her bedtime pee! Can't get her out of bed in a morning since that's been on her, very cosy!

Sunshinegirl82 · 30/11/2022 23:27

Not a puppy but our cat has a special pet heat pad in her bed covered with some blankets. It runs off the mains not a microwave one, she loves it!

mondaytosunday · 30/11/2022 23:48

My dogs sleep on my bed, the room isn't heated and they are not covered and are fine - and one has alopecia so minimal hair.
I think if it's an indoor space with blankets then your pup is fine. You could put a covered hot water bottle in if you want.

Whitney168 · 01/12/2022 11:02

Do you have the crate covered over? If not, drape a cosy blanket or two over the top on cold nights.

IVFNewbie · 01/12/2022 11:06

Use a small oil-filled radiator or keep a slow cooker going in the same room (whilst doing some cooking!)

Excitedannie · 01/12/2022 18:04

Thank you all for putting my mind at rest. The crate is covered but I think I'll pop another blanket over it when it's really cold.

I love all these dogs on your beds!!!! I'd love that but I'm resisting whilst she lives her crate!!

Spanielsarepainless · 01/12/2022 18:05

I put a thick blanket over the crate so it met the ground at the sides and back. I left the door side free though. Thick layer of newspapers under a vetbed, his teddy and blanket from the breeder and I didn't hear a peep out of him.

Goatsanddogs · 01/12/2022 18:07

I have both dogs on bed with me and the colder it is the more they snuggle into me. Keeps me nice and warm too.

Merlott · 01/12/2022 18:10

I put a hot water bottle into the dog bed!

hattie43 · 01/12/2022 18:15

By morning mine have arrived under the duvet .

Mydogisanaughtyboy · 01/12/2022 18:15

My neighbours leave their puppy outside....can't see over the fence to see what kind of house it has but getting concerned now 😟

itsthelittlethinggs · 01/12/2022 18:32

My spaniel has a soft bed with blankets in both upstairs and downstairs. He switches between the two but quite often I find him laying on the cold tiles. We don't have heating on at night.

@StopTalkingAndListen mine has his last walk at 6-7pm. When he comes in, I wipe him down with pet cleaning wipes and go over him with microfibre towel. He's clean and lovely by bedtime so doesn't worry me if he does jump up.

Mine's not allowed in the house if he has mud on him.

After walks, it's straight into the garden or bathroom for a wash and then he wears a drying coat so he dries off and doesn't make everything smell of wet dog Grin

We also have towels by the back door and will wipe his paws after he's been out for a wee.

Don't be unnecessarily. If acclimatised, some dog breeds are fine living outdoors. As long as they have somewhere dry and draught-free to curl up they'll be grand.

Think farm dogs or yard dogs, my relatives' old farm dog hated being indoors and would pant and pant until he could go back outside. In summer he slept wherever he fancied, and in winter would usually find a spot in the corner of the garage, sometimes on a bed/pile of blankets sometimes not.

Mine is tiny and single/short coated, so he doesn’t pick up a lot of much and is really easy to clean with a quick wipe over. I have to clean his belly and paws after every toilet trip though, as he seems to have very little directional control of his flow, iyswim! Hoping this will improve with age and when he stops being so easily distracted by every leaf, bug and bird in the garden. He starts off ok, then his attention wanders and he tends to turn round mid-stream. Hmm On the plus side, it means he’s now trained to run to the back porch and wait for his wipe down so he can have his treats, which makes things easier when he does get muddy.

Previous hairy beasts were only allowed upstairs if they were clean and dry. We didn’t bath them often, but they were rinsed as necessary, then thoroughly towelled dry after every walk. They all knew to wait on the doormat to have their paws wiped before they came in, even if they hadn’t got muddy too.
