Acute onset of pain in dog

Our 9.5 year old black lab cross suddenly started yelping in pain at about 18 00 tonight. He was on his own in another room and it was clearly related to his back end. He was quivering with it. It seemed to settle after about half an hour and he was much more mobile although clearly not himself but the yelping and shaking stopped. I have been out for a few hours and now I'm back he is not wanting to move. It appears to be his back right leg/hip. Every time he tries to stand up he yelps in pain and sits back down. What on earth could have happened so quickly? And what can I do for him before we can get him to the vets in the morning?

I'm so worried. Thanks

My Labrador was struck down with this but rather younger. Definitely a vet job for scan and/or X-ray. Mine turned out to have a loose coccyx but went on for another decade. Apart from pain relief, not much you can do, but don't feed him until the vet has seen him as he may need a general anaesthetic.

My old dog had this. Was lumbosacral stenosis (trapped nerve in lower back) definitely see a vet
