Dog barking when people come round

Lab cross, 10 months old. Love him to bits but he can be a right twat at times.

Current issue is, jumping up at people that visit. Because of this if he doesn't stop I put him in the kitchen behind the baby gate. Living room flows through to kitchen so no door.

He will then just bark and bark and bark so I can't have a conversation. If I put him outside he carries on.

Have tried rewarding for no barking but he rarely stops long enough for me to do that.

Any tips ?

Do you have some dog friendly friends who would be willing to help you with the jumping up issue?

Basic training for that is that when he's jumping up he is totally ignored - no eye contact, folded arms, standing still, no voices either - be super boring! When he has all four paws on the floor he gets attention - what fun! The second he jumps up he gets ignored again. Repeat until he gets the idea - they usually catch on quite quickly.

Best to have them turn up in old clothes; expect to have to do it a few times with different people, but the dog will catch on a bit quicker every time. Make sure your own family is practicing the same thing, it's not just for visitors!

@ElephantInTheKitchen I'm sure I could find some people I can rope in.

I will definitely give that a go as obviously if I could stop the jumping up, he'd not need to go in the kitchen at all then so no barking Smile

Barking when someone knives us what dogs do. Not letting

Oops. ... not letting him see who is there is making him bark more. Sorting out the jumping is the most important thing. My dog barks but stops as soon as she sees I'm OK with whoever is there - it'sa protectuve instinct. She even barks if a door bell rings on TV and then just looks foolish.

Basically - you need to train the guests in order to train the dog.

Jumping is such a hard behaviour to train out of dogs because lots of people will go "Oh, don't worry, it's fine, I love dogs!" - and the dog gets a fuss or a treat and is rewarded for jumping.

So, rope in some friends who like dogs and who won't mind getting jumped on and covered in fur, and get them to come in and totally ignore him until he has all four paws on the floor. That mean no eye contact, no verbal praise or correction, arms folded so he can't grab at them, and no fuss whatsoever.

When he's stopped jumping, they can reward/praise him calmly. If he tries to jump again, they need to go back to ignoring him again. Labs are biddable and love food, so it shouldn't take too long to break the habit if you get guests to give him food when he's got his paws on the floor Grin
