Puppy Desperation

MarchionessOfMayhem · 25/11/2022 18:26

Posting in desperation - new Puppy who we picked up a week ago and is just weeing everywhere, all the time. We take him out, he does a little wee on the grass and then comes straight in and wees on the floor. Can wee numerous times in minutes - not just tiny bits but big puddles. However he doesn't do this if he's in his bed or on our laps snuggling, only when he's wondering around or playing (so unlikely to be UTI) It's getting us all down - we can't take our eyes off of him. I've never had this with a puppy before. We do all the usual - take out after eating, drinking, at regular intervals etc. Getting really depressed by it. Breeder says he wasn't like this previously. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Might be the change and getting used to it all.
I would take him out every 30mins and watch him like a hawk indoors. When he gets ready just pick him up and take him out. It will be a tough few days, but the more he does it inside the more he will think its ok.
Make sure there are no accidents.

Sunflowers765 · 25/11/2022 19:49

We gave great treats for outside wees and nothing for inside ones. We also used a verbal cue outside when he was weeing. He'll now wee on command outside. Still have to watch him though - he's safe for about an hour now at 14 weeks.

UrsulaPandress · 25/11/2022 19:51

Just keep taking him out. And praising.

How many puppies have you had?

TrentCrimm · 25/11/2022 19:53

Say 'toilet!'(or cue word of your choice) whenever he pees, regardless of where he's doing it. Repeat when you take him outside. If you're consistent, it will become a trigger word for him to do it outside, and if you reinforce with praise and treats etc, it will eventually become only outside.

Hang in there though, how old is he?

PorridgePowered · 25/11/2022 19:54

Would double check with a vet about the UTI. It would be he has only limited control and so is weeing when distracted. Other than that, just feed him a bit of sausage everyone he does a wee outside. Ignore the inside ones. Also, get the specific wee/poo cleaner from a pet store. Dogs will wee in places that smell of wee to them, so you need an enzyme cleaner to completely remove the smell. I am confident that by Christmas thus will be a distant memory. Hang on in there.

Thanks everyone. Good suggestions which I will definitely try. I've had dogs all my life (family ran a kennels and we showed dogs many years ago) I just don't remember it ever being this stressful. My last dog was the same breed (although a bitch rather than a dog) and she was practically toilet trained from day one.

He should see the vet for a check-up. Him not peeing on your lap or in his bed doesn't mean he doesn't have a UTI.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 25/11/2022 21:20

What breed is he? Some breeds reportedly have more trouble house-training than others.
If he wees outside and then comes in and immediately does it again, is there any playing outside in between? We were told not to bring our puppy in straight away as they learn that weeing equals going indoors. Maybe he’s holding on a bit because he doesn’t want to go back inside?

user1471453601 · 25/11/2022 21:42

I know this site is anti, but we used puppy pads. They worked for us. Placed then right next to the outside doors so she was used to going to the outside doors when she needed t go. It took about a month, but she was reliable. We still did the "taking her out every had an hour, though.

persevere, your dog will get better, with patience

MrsWhites · 26/11/2022 15:26

I would keep pup to one room if possible, could be that he is finding it overwhelming and is weeing out of fear/nervousness.

Take out every 30 min and treat for a wee and big fuss, if they only do a tiny wee or don’t do anything carry them inside and keep hold of them for 5/10 min then take out again. Only put them down on floor when you know they have had a good wee and are likely to not have an accident.

Hope if clicks soon!

Newpeep · 26/11/2022 17:58

The problem with treating for wees is smart dogs learn to wee lots to get treats! So just use gentle praise. Keep taking out. It will happen eventually.

Crate sounded by a Puppy enclosure with doggy pee pads down. Do not let him have free run of the house! He needs to learn where he can pee and that's outside but he needs two small simple areas to learn or it's overwhelming. Outside yes, inside enclosure or crate no. If it's near his bed he will not wee. Our pup had three events in her first three weeks. Outside for wee, in crate to sleep, in enclosure to eat and play.

Take him outside as often as possible to pee with code word. Treats when he does. Spend long enough outside to let him get it all out. Our pup used to take three goes.

Girlintheframe · 27/11/2022 08:24

I don't think your pups behavior is unusual at all tbh.

As pp as said take them out every 30 mins to begin with until you have a better understanding of his pooing/peeing routine.

In the meantime when pup pees inside just scoop pup up and take straight outside without ceremony. Clean up the pee with an enzyme cleaner. Make a massive fuss of them when they do pee outside.

Do all this on loop! Good luck

mintbiscuit · 27/11/2022 14:35

ugh, we had this with our terrier (lab was trained by 10 weeks).

What we did:
outside every 15 mins (it was summer so we spent quite a bit of time in the garden anyway)
enzyme cleaner
treat after going outside
outside after waking, playing and eating

Riverlee · 28/11/2022 20:24

Lots of praise and treats for seeing outside.

Ignore wees inside, just clear up and spray with smell- disguising spray.

Also, you’ve only had him a week, it may be nerves due to new environment.
