How to help dog gain weight?

Our foster dog is quite underweight. I took him to the vet last week and he gained 1/2 kg from when he was found 2 weeks previously (now 17kg). The vet said she'd like to see him gain at least another 2kg but we need ot be careful with protein (not sure because of age or the meds he's on for differnet things). He really is skinny, you can feel his pelvic bones and spine very clearly but has a little bit more around the ribs.
What's the best and healthiest way to fatten him up a bit?

I’d add in lunch, maybe half a sachet of barking heads (protein level 9%) or if that’s too high something like chappie?

The highest calorie food on the market is Millies Wolfheart either Endurance or performance(but check with them which is most suitable). It may be that high protein food is not the best way to gain weight but they also have high calorie carb food which for many dogs means they pile on the weight quickly.

However your weight gain in two weeks sounds fine to me carry on like that and he will soon be at maximum weight

Our rescue struggled to maintain her weight for the whole of her life. Our vet recommended corn oil added to her food which helped when she was younger.

Feeding more just gave her the runs. She needed more calories. I competed in agility with her and she would drop weight over a season. Like people some dogs just need more calories as they’ve got a higher metabolic rate.

I switched my cat to a raw diet (I use Bella and Duke) and gave him VetCal Pro Gel when he lost a bit of weight as he wasn’t able to digest kibble and kept having awful diarrhoea. He’s nicely chunked up again now and he’s back in beautiful condition.
