I’m a human oncologist and so blasé about cancer generally. My lovely boy has cancer. I feel so useless. Would love some support please. I don’t know what to do and I can’t stop crying.

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. It must be hard when you know all the science.

Do remember your dog is living in the moment and will not be feeling as emotional as you are.

Have the medics got a plan or are they making your dog feel comfortable?

It is extremely hard when you dog is poorly.

It's shit. I'm not an emotional person generally and I was absolutely floored by my dogs cancer diagnosis, the ups and downs of treatment, and her death in January. I'm now waiting for the results of xrays on my other dog, who has suspect osteosarcoma. I can't really cope if I lose two relatively young supposedly healthy breeds in one year, I haven't recovered from the first yet, I miss her every day.

It really is the pits. Take some time off and don't let anyone say 'it's only a dog', they're miserable human beings if they don't understand, and haven't had the unconditional love of a hound.

My little old lady was diagnosed with cancer the other day. She is 15 and a half and we sort of suspected she had it. She has a list of other health issues ( arthritis, heart failure and vestibular syndrome) and needs lots of TLC but she does still enjoy her food and is always sniffing about for snacks when we are eating.

She is far too old for anything other than palliative care but we are under no illusion that these are just to keep her comfortable. The vet said she would be unlikely to just go in her sleep and we needed to look out for signs that she was in pain/ not eating to make the final decision. We were all in bits last weekend as she was very unwell and we thought that the time had come but the steroids seem to have really helped and she is a bit brighter at the moment.

My had had this morning been diagnosed with lymphoma, he is only 8 and my heart is breaking

Kesiat · 30/11/2022 11:07

Thanks all. Sorry for others going through this. They found more lesions and he has started to bleed so we will put him up sleep tomorrow. I’m devastated. It’s so quick.

So sorry op. The last thing you can do for your beloved boy is be with him. Remember he won't know.

You sadly carry that burden.
