Help puppy food cost through the roof 😭

We have a 5 month old puppy and he is costs us £40 a week on wet food (nature menu) currently and we have been told it’s about to go to £60 a week. We transitioned from dry kibble (skinners) as he had ‘sloppy’ poos constantly. His poos are mixed still but becoming more solid. What am I missing with brands etc. we were looking a raw feeding but we’ve decided against that. Does the cost ever go down at all?? We can afford all the costs associated with pup but £60 a week seems a little eye watering… I want to do best by my pup

I also came on here to say that sloppy poo is a sign you're over feeding.

My lab boy is on 200g Skinners kibble in the morning, same in the evening. Few treats during training. They really don't need a lot of food. £35 a month.

I feed raw. There's a calculation, something like 3% of your dogs eventual weight. So a dog that will be a 10kg adult needs about 300g raw a day. 20kg adult, 600g a day. 40kg 1.2kg a day

Chicken and pork are usually available for about £3.50 a kg.

At a guess your pup (assuming he's half his adult weight now) would want about £4 a day.

Check out the correct way to do it. I'm a prey model raw person, with whatever extras he shows interest in (apples cores etc).

We use wolfworthy highly recommend much cheaper and really good quality like raw

No idea what breed your gundog is but if it is a Golden Retriever it should not be fed a grain free diet.

RoachTheHorse · 24/11/2022 15:12

Like @BoobsOnTheMoon I'm on Eden.

We were raw feeding but costs just kept rising. Slowly swapped him to Eden and he's been fine. Ao much cheaper too.

Why's that, Freedom?

picklemewalnuts · 24/11/2022 15:59

Ok, I googled. Could be a low organ diet issue, or a pulses/potato rich diet.

Was checking from a raw perspective (not that I have a golden).

This (Markus Muhle) lasts my two dogs for a month. It costs £35. It really sorted my puppy’s tummy out. They don’t need very big portions at all, but like it so much that I can use it as a training treat.

SarahSissions · 24/11/2022 17:23

It’s a flat coat retriever.

@picklemewalnuts golden retrievers are more prone to DCM which has been linked in a study to grain free diets. The study hypothesised that this is due to legumes in grain free diets being used to up the protein % and reducing the amount of taurine- so a high quality grain free diet if the dog is intolerant to grains should be fine but significant further research is needed

We use Dr Johns puppy, a bag lasts about six weeks and costs about £25 delivered by the local wholesaler. The older dog is on an adult feed that again lasts about a month a bag at about £22 delivered.

My golden retriever is on Millie’s wolf heart, suits him really well and perfect poos. Also had the same issue on skinners when he was picked up hence moving to Millie’s. They have nutritionists you can ring for advice re which recipes are best.

My 6 month old is 27kg & fed on Harrington puppy dry with wet puppy food such as winalot pup pouches. He's a fussy bugger & doesn't like most things.

Thanks everyone. We had to take him to the vet as he has conjunctivitis, that night after posting we had a massive pooplosion in the kitchen (he has NEVER EVER poked in the house before) so whilst we had the vet appointment they are checking his poo to make sure he hasn’t got any nasties. The vet said that he looks healthy for his breed and being fed the right amount, we are waiting to hear back from the lab and if that’s clear we’ve been advised to go onto a hypoallergenic diet so we are goi go to looks at all your recommendations and go from there
