Hi just a rant really. Ddog has had a condition since a pup which has unfortunately worsened over the last few weeks . He will be on various medications for the rest of his life which could be around a year to 18mtha.
Vet has suggested writing a written prescription to allow me to purchase the medication online as it's cheaper than they can sell to me . Brilliant I thought,
Phone call with surgery today £23.50 per prescription!!! I need 4 so almost £100 for a piece of paper . This is before I even pay the £385 for the medication.
How is this even realistic? I can't afford this every 3mths. Obviously I will pay this time but it's shocked me. I had no idea it has to be an individual script for each item but am assured it's the way all surgeries operate.
Anyway rant over and thanks for letting me get it off my chest

Yep, we were wondering why our credit card bills were so much higher lately and it turns out the dog is mainly responsible! Pet care is eye-watering expensive when they start getting ailments-we’re in a similar position to you, our dog has a life-limiting condition and has about two years left. We want him to be comfortable during that time, but it’s going to be expensive. ☹️

It's just scary isn't it. You love them so much but having spent over £1000 in th last month you begin to hate yourself for wondering how much longer you can continue it 😢

Ask the vet to write the prescription for a greater quantity/longer time, it's still a big upfront cost but will allow you to buy more months worth of drugs.

My vet charges the same whether she writes a prescription for one months worth of drugs or 6 months worth. As the drugs are a third of the price online, it's then worth paying the prescription charge

Can you get a six monthly prescription instead of a monthly one?

If she's insured you can claim the medication costs via there too.

Our vets provide a precription for 6 repeats - so that's twice a year. It's £17 for the first item and £10 for each extra precription item. It isn't the vets that decide that they can only put one item on a prescription. If you didn't use the NHS, you would pay for a precription and the medications as well. So it probably wouldn't be any different - and assuming you work then you are paying for the NHS anyway through your taxes.

That's a good idea re the longer prescription times. Thanks everyone. I will ask for that Only problem is the medication gets reviewed regularly and so I'm wary about buying too much and then it changes.
Also no insurance as it's a pre existing condition 🤦‍♀️
Thanks for the suggestions and allowing me to vent.
