I'm not even sure why I'm writing this, but I'm just trying to make sense about what happened yesterday afternoon.

It was such a perfect autumn day I took my dogs (cocker age 9, springer age 2 and cocker age 1) to Salisbury plain for a good old stomp about - kids (6&7) and husband in tow too. We had a blast! Lots of laughter, throwing of leaves, basically a perfect Sunday afternoon.

Then, on the way back to the car, my beautiful 1 year old cocker, lay down and died. No sound, no dramatics, nothing. He was about 4 paces away from me happily bouncing around - I turned to chivvy the children along - turned back and he was lying in the grass completely still, he was gone before I made it to him.

I can't process it. How does this happen?? I lost a 2 year old springer in 2020 due to kidney failure so I have been OTT careful with my other dogs. They're fed the best food, walked at least an hour off lead every day, stimulated and fussed to within an inch of their lives. I cannot believe I've lost another super young dog.

What's worse is that my poor children witnessed it all - I didn't react well and tried to perform a haphazard attempt at doggy CPR. My husband then had to carry my gorgeous boy back to the car - a good 20 minute walk. He's my hero.

Did I do something wrong? My head says no but you always blame yourself. We drove straight to our vet and he said it could only have a been a heart attack to go so quickly.

So, that's that. He's coming home on Thursday and the children have decided we should scatter his ashes where we scattered our other dog so they can run free together. I'm so very proud of them, we had a few tears and lots of questions at bedtime but they seem content knowing he's not alone and with our other springer in doggy heaven.

It's so unfair

I wouldn't wish this feeling on my worst enemy! Thank you all for your kind words - somehow knowing they're from fellow doggy owners is hugely comforting

I'm so sorry for your loss. How are your other dogs coping?

lipstickwoman · 14/11/2022 08:58

Goodness, how horribly traumatic and sad for you and your family.

For your pup though, it perhaps was just the opposite. A glorious romp around with people who loved him, then just fall asleep, in a moment of absolute joy.

You sound a lovely doggie mum, he was lucky to have been in your family.

What was his name?

milawops · 14/11/2022 09:00

I'm so sorry for your loss that must have been awful for all of you. Small comfort I know but what a perfect last day your boy had with the people that love him.

It’s so sad, the breed dogs are so inbred though, this happens far too often.

No it really doesn’t.

I’m so sorry. What a horrible shock. He died after a wonderful afternoon - no consolation to you but dogs live for the moment. He had a fabulous one.

StrongTea · 14/11/2022 09:35

Such a shock, bad enough when they are older and have had a good life, so unfair when so young.

EnglishBreakfastTea · 14/11/2022 11:01

@lipstickwoman his name was McCartney - Mac for short and all the various wonderful variations in between, my personal favourite was Macaroni cheese. He was your typical puppy, a complete pain at times but didn't have a bad bone in his body.

@Freysimo my older cocker hasn't noticed a thing - then again, I'm not sure she would notice (or care) if everything in her life changed just as long as dinner arrives at 5pm, otherwise it's the end of the world.

I'm waiting for my springer to notice. She's going to be lost without him, they were firm friends. I'll miss the play fighting noise, they used to make the weirdest chirruping noises to each other, wish I'd recorded it.

Oh OP great pic and a fabulous name! He looks very happy.

I'm so sorry x

SarahSissions · 14/11/2022 11:32

How awful for you all. I don’t think Mac would’ve wished for a nicer last day on a lovely walk with his pack. You sound like you give your dogs the best of lives.

familyissues12345 · 14/11/2022 12:35

So sorry OP, dogs really do play such a big part in our lives don't they

Rest peacefully Mac, you gorgeous boy ❤️

gogohmm · 14/11/2022 13:06

So sorry. Was watching this farming life yesterday and similar happened to one of the farmers, 18month old sheepdog also a heart attack. Felt upset for him too

WhatJustHappened321 · 14/11/2022 14:10

Oh no now I'm even more heartbroken. He was absolutely gorgeous. And looks very very happy Flowers

Passmethegin67 · 14/11/2022 15:17

So very sorry OP. How awful for you all - my condolences. Hope it's some comfort that it sounds like there was nothing you could have done and he would have been having the time of his life prior to this and so went with a smile on his gorgeous golden face.

userxx · 14/11/2022 22:13

Oh no, this is so sad to read and what a horrific shock for you all.
